The argument is that once a nutcase decides to go on a killing spree there are virtually unlimited means available to said nutcase. How do you propose to control the availability of all potential means of killing from the hands of nutcases, let alone remove the 300 million firearms that are in circulation in the US?
The AR-15 is not a military style weapon, only morons with no knowledge of firearms make such a claim. It is a rifle that fires one round each time the trigger is pulled, so effectively useless in a modern military context.

The argument that banning rifles like the AR-15 would reduce the gun murder rate or indeed the overall murder rate in the US isn’t supported by the facts. Of the 8,583 gun murders in the US in 2011, less than 1% were with so called assault weapons. For that matter, of all murders committed, 323 were with any kind of rifle, while 496 were committed using hammers and clubs, and 1,694 with knives.
Based on these actual facts, banning hammers and knives would be more effective, and banning hand guns by far the most effective. Good luck with that.

No, he would have used another weapon/weapons, as many others have done. The AWB which was in place for a decade didn’t stop Columbine or other mass killings.
The only thing that would have stopped yesterday’s shooting was having this guy, who had made numerous violent threats against the school, off the streets, or at the very least closely monitored.
