Angry Metalheads & Punks

Layne Staley died 15 years ago in April 2002. His work with Alice in Chains is music that I come back to again and again.

The Rock FM NZ played heaps of Alice in Chains and it reawakened my passion big time for them when I was there.

Staley’s story is fairly grim. A terrible waste.

Great tune. Not a patch on your previous effort, King Contrary Man. By the way, if you’re only going to post tracks by The Cult in here, that’s absolutely fine by me.

I have put a few slayer ones up and I think a Judas Priest one .

My bad mate.

Here’s a great live video of The Cult, and more especially Billy Duffy.

Speaking as a child of the 90s…

Chris Cornell was a cool motherfucker, and was up there with the best front men; Layne Staley, Bon Scott, Maynard James Keenan, etc. As well as being a very talented singer, he was a gifted songwriter, and he wrote some very fitting tributes to friends that passed away ahead of their time.

Listening back to some of the songs he wrote in the 30 or so years he was recording, I’ve picked out a few of my favourites…

Say Hello To Heaven (for Andy Wood)

Wave Goodbye (for Jeff Buckley)

Fell on Black Days

Tighter & Tighter

Tighter & Tighter is unquestionably my favourite Soundgarden song, taken from my favourite Soundgarden album, “Down on the Upside”. It’s a massive soundscape, and there’s a real poignancy attached to the lyrics - more evident now than ever before. Another dead hero, RIP.

Shadow face
Blowing smoke and talking wind
Lost my grip
Fell too far to start again
A sudden snake
Found my shape and tells the world
Remember this
Remember everything is just black
Or burning sun

And I hope it’s a sweet ride
Sleep tight for me
Sleep tight for me I’m gone

Warm and sweet
Swinging from a windows ledge
Tight and deep
One last sin before I’m dead
A sucking holy wind
Will take me from this bed tonight
And bloody wits
Another hits me and I have to say goodbye

And I hope it’s a sweet ride
Here for me tonight
'Cause I feel I’m going
Feel I’m slowing down

Was just listening to some Soundgarden in the car. I was asking the young fella (17) if he knew them and about Cornell dying. Said he did so we said we’d have a tribute listen. Brilliant vocalist.

Without a doubt, mate. The brilliance of his vocal abilities was surpassed only by his ability to craft incredible, complex songs and beautiful lyrics. A quintessential Rock God.

RIP

Had that tune on repeat when Down on the Upside came out. Thanks for the reminder.

Superb tribute moth. The Temple of the Dog album is the most under appreciated and possibly the most enjoyable of the entire Seattle scene. Mike McCready’s solo on Reach Down is worth the price of the album.

Here you go pal…enjoy.

I saw Soundgarden in the O2 a few years ago and was fairly underwhelmed. My love affair with them never really recovered.

It’s an awful pity because in my youth I was a big fan. They could play the range, from heavy as fuck to all sweetness and light, but always underpinned by an instinct for an odd rhythm or melody, and most importantly Cornell’s powerful, powerful vocals. I’m only getting the chance after a busy week to throw on a good whack of the soundtrack of my teens. God speed Chris Cornell.

Not sure if quite a fit for this thread but listening this morning to Elder: Reflections of a Floating World, more a stoner-doom kinda vibe, with some tasty riffs.

I’ve been giving this album some serious rotation for the past week or two. Considering it is a 6-track album clocking in at over the hour mark, there’s clearly the potential for a lot of self-indulgent wankery. There’s none. It’s rock fucking solid from start to finish.

Nick DiSalvo’s vocals on “Blind” sound like Perry Farrell at times, which is no bad thing. Metal album of the year so far.

cc. @Fagan_ODowd, this beats the piss out of the last Mastodon effort. Well worth the purchase.
