I had one of these last week, Fran and the overriding emotion I had while eating it was confusion. I thought by the wrapper that it was Smarties inside the chocolate but I was sadly mistaken. A bit of a weird and unsatisfactory sensation I must say. Thereâs a cookie nut crunch version in the fridge now since last Thursday which is laughing at me every time I open the fridge but Iâve been eating too much crap the last 2 weeks so I am trying to be strong.
Having said all that I forgot to go ahead with my recommendation.
I recently sampled some Holy Molys (which can be purchased in Super Valu). They are shaped like a sawn off Curly Wurly but they are biscuity as opposed to chewy caramel. I wouldnât have them in my top 25 bars, but Iâd rate them ahead of Moro in the biscuit based bar equation. Well worth a look.

Recently discovered by my family and enjoyed by all, a good shout.
I think theyâre fine for the underdeveloped palate Chewy. I donât want to be condescending because for much of my youth I was very keen on this sort of confectionary. But as I mature, I find I prefer a chewier caramel (if youâll pardon the pun).
A fine diversion from a plain Galaxy but steer clear from making it a staple of your diet.
Thanks, Rocko.
What are your thoughts on the Yorkie man sized buttons?

Purchased one of these badboys in Stale. Tastewise its close enough to the texan alright. The only areas it falls down are the slightly inferior chocolate and the lack of elasticity compared to the original but a damn fine after lunch treat, thanks
Now my interest has been piqued in the range of american sweets in Stale, can you recommend any yankee sweets?

I do my best to keep abreast of Transatlantic confectionery but itâs hard to be up to speed with every offering.
Youâll doubtless be familiar with the likes of Reeses Pieces and Hersheyâs offerings so Iâll elaborate on a couple of personal favourites.
Firstly, the Charleston Chew is from the Tootsieroll company. Iâm sure weâve all had a few Tootsie Rolls in our day but theyâre well worth a return visit. Buy the little roll of them (stocked in the same places as the Chew) and theyâre a nice side of the mouth chew to keep you going while walking around the city.
A box of Milk Duds is well worth picking up if you happen across them. Theyâre from the Hershey Company but arenât widely available here. They merit a visit to a specialist store though. A great nibble while youâre at home sitting on the couch.
Away from chocolate altogether, a pack of Now and Laters are a nice variation from what you get here. They seem absolutely loaded in stuff thatâs bad for you. They are tough on the outside for an initial chomp, and then theyâre chewy inside for delayed gratification. Hence the name. Not anything to be going out of your way to be buying weekly, but well worth an odd purchase.

Meh
This thread piqued my interest so I purchased my first ever Charleston Chew this evening. I enjoyed it immensely with a post dinner cup of tea and Iâll definitely purchase them again. Fresh in Grand Canal Dock has an American Confectionery section should anybody else reside in the area and wish to sample a tasty chocolate treat.
Can we just refer to Fresh as Stale as its closer to the truth
Fine with me, pal.
Iâd love a few jellies right now. Jelly snakes or something like that.
Go for it mate.
Delighted. When you become a regular user you can start to call them Charlie Chews which is what theyâre often called Stateside.
@Rocko, I had my first ever Tootsie Roll with a cup of tea during half time of the West Brom-Manchester United match. Grand, but nowhere near Charleston Chew quality. I donât think Iâd bother purchasing one again.
Have you tried Crunchie Rocks, yet? I impulse purchased a bag last week and theyâve impressed all and sundry in the apartment. Repeat purchases have been made.

Tootsie Rolls are a staple cheap sweet in the US. Wouldnât even dream of comparing them to a Charleston Chew, theyâre just a handy harmless mindless chew. When I worked on the skeeball alley in Palace Playland in Old Orchard Beach Maine, every ball through the centre cup won the participant a prize ticket which could be exchanged for a tootsie roll. Great times.
Havenât tried Crunchie Rocks but will make it my business to do so.
I once ate a whole box of thorntons chocolate covered toffee in one sitting. From the fridge. I had cramp in my jaw toward the end but struggled on. I darenât have them in the house anymore. They are delicious. As you found my taste in biscuits a little on the proletarian side, I wonder* how you would rate these @Rocko
*idle curiosity, not something I care deeply about.
