Association Football Kits

I presume this is the one you’re thinking of. That particular jersey saw us edge out Tipp in the All Ireland semi final, followed by a narrow defeat to Kilkenny in the final with a late goal from PJ Delaney being the decisive score.

Yeah but it sort of jumbles into the mind with the Mayo/Clare Connolly’s design of the same time.

That victory over Tipperary was the only championship victory of consequence that Galway had in an obviously Connolly’s designed kit.

I think Connolly’s made the Galway kit from at least '87/'88 onwards and possibly before that but that kit was the same design as what Galway had worn throughout the 80s with the Adidas style three stripes on the shoulder. The 1990 All-Ireland was the last time they wore that and the switch to the Connolly designs heralded an immediate downturn in fortunes.

I suppose they worked for Clare and Wexford. I thought the Connolly jerseys were dreadful looking yokes on the whole though. 1997 was the last of them.

The Connolly’s Clasico. This Mayo kit is an abomination and the Galway one isn’t much better.

I would say that they started the 1986 Hurling All Ireland in an O’Neills kit and then switched to a Connolly one at half time. Open to correction on this but I remember saying it to the auld boy at the time at which stage he told me to fuck off and sit down and be quiet. I did all three.

The Galway football team switched jerseys at half time in the '83 final. First half they had stripes on the shoulders but none in the second. Dublin did the same. They had the classic pinstripe kit in the first half but no pinstripes in the second.

The Cork hurlers did that against Limerick in 1994 as well.

It rained heavily in the first half of both of those matches.

The old jerseys used to sweat up badly even on dry days.

I get that, and I remember Galway coming out in a different set of jerseys in the '83 AI Football final, but they were also O’Neills. In '86 they changed from O’Neills to Connolly. I’ll do a bit of digging there now and see what I come up with.

Incredible, no picture of Galway before the 1986 hurling final on Google. Any images I have of them on the day they are in their Connolly kit so I may be wrong. The pic in the bottom left hand corner was taken in Thurles and could have been in the semi-final where they hammered Kilkenny by 4 goals or possibly a league final.

A quick YouTube would suggest Galway didn’t make any obvious kit change in 1986 and that the jerseys looked like they were made by Connolly’s, the numbers on the backs of the jerseys were definitely Connolly style.

Their 1985 kit looks like O’Neills.

YouTube says yes. I only glanced at the first half of the '85 final. Second half was a change.
