Better facilities, better coaching, better structures and that higher standard giving them better training partners etc.

Yeah she’s as Irish as any of us. I’ve met her and her parents. They’ve made huge sacrifices to allow her get to where she is. Like any parent of any kid who makes it that far - lots of planning and driving them places, travelling with her to international events. Delighted to see her fulfilling her potential.

Thanks, any link to an article/podcast about it. Reminds me of how Irish amateur boxing came out of the doldrums 15 years ago led by Gary Keegan.

This is the second or third (I think) strategic plan. Athletics is for the coaches and athletes a vocation really - there’s no money in it.

Coaching coaches has helped a lot. It’s an individual sport but there’s a real athletics community where people are will help and give back.

I’m almost sure I read something about teenage girls preferring individual sports to team sports after a certain age.
I’ll try to find it

All those girls were playing basketball, hockey, football and/or camogie until at least 16 or 17 when they are more or less told to stop in case of injury.

Tom Barr - qualifies for Tokyo and his 3rd ever fastest time. A clutch athlete

Michelle Finn also qualified for 3000m steeplechase. 2nd fastest ever time by an Irish athlete

Would he have any chance of a medal or a final?

I was chatting to somebody vaguely involved in British triathlon yesterday (we were out running, I said I was fcuking roasting in the sweltering heat)**
He told me that that time the brownlee lad collapsed at the race and his brother stopped to help, his core body temperature nearly an hour later was still 40 degrees, which, to give some perspective, at 40 degree core temperature, there’s a 10% mortality rate.
Its actually a sign of how tough these high end athletes are, all high end amateur and pro athletes, that he made it 9k into the run.

It’s also a sign that many of these events are a pile of wank.

Hurdles is a technical event so there’s always a chance if the stars align of reaching a final. But he’ll need a lot of luck and good draws in heats etc

Reaching a track final in Olympics is a phenomenal achievement.

They’d been in training camp in Canada, and flew from there to Mexico 🤷

Are you saying he’ll have to clear a lot of hurdles?

He will. Mixed in with running a bit.

All athletes have a little want in them, and its not a bad thing whatsoever. But endurance athletes are a different barrel of monkeys entirely.

Same running style as Gearoid Hegarty
