Ya it is that, i think his point was the horses are nowehere near the standard of the other big races. Honestly, i wouldn’t have a notion. I’m off too today, mainly because of this, so we’re going to go watch it and enjoy the occasion.
[/quote]You are correct, another example of the Aussie way of doing things, it is a handicap but rated a Group 1 in Oz, which is preposterous in a civilised country, GP1 is the pinnacle level of flat racing, but in Oz, they allow 4th division plodders to enter and handicap the horses to make it worse
Kev is talking a lot of sense on this thread. I loath Australians and their ego’s and find them to be some if the most obnoxious peoples I have met, second only to Israelis… Places like Canada and Oz have carried out atrocious acts until fairly recently against their indigenous inhabitants but never received half the attention a south Africa etc did because of its position in the empire.
6 of the first 7 home were European trained as well. The race on the whole is a joke. Am sure it’s great for the locals and it lets everyone go on the piss but it’s no better than some of the races you’d see in Galway in July / August over here.
At the media launch Mark Johnson said something along the lines of “To be honest the race doesn’t hold much kudos in Europe, but it’s a hell of a lot of prize money” which summed it up pretty nicely.
Here’s the actual quote
He is also a man ready to win the Melbourne Cup, which is a race he admittedly only covets for the money - and quiet satisfaction in snatching Australia’s prized race from under its nose.
“The Melbourne Cup is not seen in Europe as it is in Australia,” he says bluntly. "That’s not my fault. It’s just a fact. I would be lying if I said the Melbourne Cup has any-where near the same kudos in Europe it has over here. It’s a huge big prize and a huge challenge to take a horse from one side of the world to the other and win it. But it’s not the biggest race in the world.
“It’s not the most prestigious race. But it’s certainly the most valuable. And this is my best chance to win it.”
That’s class. I don’t have a lot of time for Hugh Taylor but his tweet this morning made me laugh
With Europeans dominating Mlbrn Cup, sure to be more talk of cap next year, but I do hope they still allow at least a few Australian entries
The Grand National would be the most popular race in Europe would it not? That’s a handicap race too full of shit horses. The British Isles mentality out of some of you is sickening
+1

Dope. It would attract the exact same once a year merchants that the Melbourne Cup attracts.
It pales in significance to the prestige of the Gold cup from a National Hunt point of view. Not to mention the numerous Group 1 Classics on the flat
I love it when KIB Man talks with authority on something he knows absolutely nothing about
The Grand national is a joke of a race, you really haven’t a clue
Which is exactly my point
But it isn’t the most popular in Europe and would pale in comparison to the likes of the Prix De l’Arc de Triomphe for example which would be a far bigger event with 4 times the prize money and 10 times the prestige, except it wouldn’t attract anywhere near the amount of one day a year merchants the National would.
Great to see KIB man running rings around the horsey set on here.
The fact that the IRA chose to disrupt the Grand National and not Cheltenham clearly tells you which is the more prestigious race.
+1
maybe if mac & his cronies spent less time slopping out the stables & more time listening to KIB man they wouldnt spend their spare time watching pets race
Watching horses running down a field for fun (!) must surely be one of the most retarded past-times going.
