Ausbloodystralia

I rarely venture into this thread which I had naively believed to be mostly about the cultureless desert that is Australia but I’m shocked to learn it’s real purpose has been for use as the platform for a vitriolic display of insolence against gentlemen of the turf like myself.

Christ, that old chestnut. They bring this shit out for a spin every so often when Canberra wants to increase the tax take. This whole thing about WA underwriting the rest of the country is a total crock. Mining employs less than 2% of the Australian workforce and contributes to less than 8% of total GDP despite resources prices being at an all time high. The tax and economic rent contribution from mining is ridiculously low. When the “mining boom” bursts in a few years, you’ll hear nothing but complaining that we didn’t take enough out of it. It gives me a pain in the hole when I hear people who know nothing banging on about WA subsidising the rest of the country. Its utterly untrue, has no basis in fact and is the result of the highly successful anti government, anti tax campaign the mining industry runs (ask Kevin Rudd). Pretty much al of the mining profits in Aus go offshore as well. WA’s has a net tax contribution from Canberra.

I would like to point out SS that I have taken no part in this shameful attack on the noblest of sports. As you are aware, I am attempting to bring Flann O’Bfrien to the convict class here, your unwavering support in this endeavour has always been appreciated.

Further to my point above BTW, I think it was a Deloitte / Access Economics report last year that founf every coal mining job in Australia in subsidised by government to the tune of $100k +. Great contribution from the mining industry alright.

Some more on government subsidisation of mining:

No, delighted to be missing that part of it. Always go if invited, but hate them, they are sick.

In what way? That doesn’t sound right at all going on what i have read and heard.

Jesus fitzy is a defensive twat sometimes. I think even the politicaians on both sides have said the mining in WA over the next few years will save them from widespread recession. Tourism has taken an awful battering in most of Oz, i mean after that it has very little. Mining in Queensland should balance the books eventually.

They are selling out cheap, there is no doubt about that, but there is 30-40 years of mining there, and maybe more. Then China and India will own Australia.

Aus will be in the mother of all recessions when the commodity boom slows, as it undoubtedly will.

Cost of living in this country is out of sync with reality.

Ya, won’t happen for a while though i’d say. Hard for a country to go into recession when they need to bring in 10 M people over th next 20 years. What they are doing now is trying to get as many white english speaking people in first, and then open the flood gates when all else fails.

A Irish engineer who works in mining industry told me they are only about 1 % into the mining they have even explored yet. Not to mind the areas they haven’t even gone near.

Remember when FAS used to go out foreign looking for lads to come over to Ireland? Ah the good old days of full employment, soft landings and the end of boom ‘n’ bust.

Moron.

Good Guinness is one of the big things i miss from home. You don’t realise what you have till it’s gone…

Absolutely Dunph, I gave up trying to find a decent pint here years ago, I savour my pints at home.

Kev, how am I a defensive twat? I’m pointing out the actual economic facts, not some shit I heard from some fella who’s been here a few months.

hey fucko, if we have queries about sandpaper or liquid nails we will come to you- we certainly dont want to here your guff about the economy

Yawn, next.

Fitzy, quick lesson. It doesn’t matter how long you have been in NSW, its a very different place from WA, you might as well be in France. SO you know about as much as me about it, very little. I speak to natives and long term residents all the time, as well as Johnny come lately’s. Its not that hard to pick up on whats going on through the people and the way the government are talking both here and federally. WA definitely wants to do things its own way. Obviously independence is utterly out of the question, but they do feel different, and they don’t feel they should have this huge mining boom and half or more of the profits go to the rest of Oz. It seeems they would far prefer to give it to the Chinese and Indians amongst others.

The federal government and people on all sides are now realising many outsiders are investing in Oz because of mining, and where is most of the mining? Yes, WA. Its the reason i’m here. Mining is booming, miners and their families are making big money and they want to spend accordingly. I’m here helping them to spend it. As are thousands others. Its that simple. The rate of building (which has slowed a little apparently, but is expected to go mental again next year) is phenomenal. Basically they don’t have enough workers to build the houses they need.

Also, many of the companies working over here would have businesses registered in Q, Vic, NSW etc, so the stats as you describe them are not entirely accurate

Do you ever go out to Cooneys in Craanford Mac? That used to be my local, savage craic there building up to Christmas before. A great little village pub for the size of it.

Never drank out in Craanford. Only ever there for coursing or GAA. Locals always seemed a bit odd!!

Oh the strangest I ever met. Didn’t know what to make of the place. Looks all prim and proper to the passing eye but some strange goings on in the village then!

Is it populated with prods?

No

Got married in Tara Hill church a couple of months ago Thrawneen. Nice little spot
