The Great Man showing the resolve that’s made him the Greatest Player of all time. He pulls the tie break out of the fire 10-8 after saving 7 match points in that fourth set. I don’t know how he did that. Pure grit.
I think Pat Cash calls it cheating.
Well and all as he’s played, Sandgren showing why he’s a 28 year old journeyman, ranked 100. He tightened up on a lot of those match points. Commentator saying that Sandgren has won all 4 of his career 5 setters.

The Great Man breaks and consolidates for 5-2. Sandgren has lost this in his head. That’s why he’s a 100 ranked plodder.
He’s done it! The Great Man, injured but unbowed saves 7 match points before capitalizing on his own first match point to win 6-3 2-6 2-6 7-6 6-3.
It’s sad to see the Fed Express struggling against the bottom feeders. He’s dying with his boots on but you’d have to question the wisdom of playing top level tennis at his age. Hopefully Mirka will pull him to one side after the tournament and give him a gentle nudge.
It’s sad to look at him in a lot of ways reduced to slumming it out in 5 setters with journeymen like Millman and Sandgren who wouldn’t have taken 5 games off him a few years ago. What warrior like spirit and resolve though. Plenty of the top players would have quit on their chair there after picking up a groin injury like that when behind so far in the match. Roger has never quit on his chair though in his 20 year plus career.

Federer is grinding down opponents 10 years his junior and outlasting them down the final stretch. It’s and amazing physical metamorphosis.
Physically, he is doing things at close to 40 that he could not manage in his 20s.

The standard is much higher now. For peds first dozen or so slams he faced bums.

That was something like Roger’s 58th five setter in his 20 year plus professional career. It was just the 5th for Sandgren and I think it was 4 for Millman.
