Beckham

Beckham is joining LA Galaxy in a 5 year deal worth 125m - that’s almost 500k a WEEK. Previously it was only washd up legends who joined MLS at 36/37 to earn some top dollar for a couple of years instead of sitting on the bench for some European team earining a measly 50k a week. Beckham is only 31 and, whatever people say about his footballing ability, surely still capable of performing to a relatively high level in a major European league. I’m sure Posh had a major influence on the decision but it also says a lot about him as a pro that he blatantly doesn’t have the ambition or faith in his own ability to try and get back into the England team.

Could this be the the first of many high profile players moving to the MLS at a relatively young age purely to follow the cash? Yes imo.

Awful lack of ambition - but you’re right I think he’ll be the first of many. What odds on Stokes to follow him?

Not surprising following his antics in the World Cup against Portugal where he was crying on the bench - he was finished once he did that. It says a lot for Capello that he marginalised the clown at Real. His wife ruined him - he always had something special in that right foot and had a decent attitude but she turned him into an absolute joke of a footballer

Keane had a dig at Strachan in todays Examiner. Said he was putting pressure on Stokes to sign for Celtic and that wasn’t the way to treat such a young talent.

He could have done a job at someone like spurs. Just shows Fergie was spot on when he sold him, he has done absolutely nothing at Real in his time there and it was only media hype and the fact that Sven was afraid to rock the boat that kept him in the England team and unbelievably as captain. A washed up footballer.

Undoubtedly Posh is behind the LA move. In fairness though thats a sick amount of money to try and turn down.

Just saw your post there Jack, the Examiner is unlikely to ever be critical of Roy Keane.

The amount of money on offer is sickening but having said that anyone would be stupid to turn it down.
I wonder will his fat friend Ronaldo jump on the bandwagon and hit the states or fook off to Qatar

If he was still the player he was then I think it would have been a silly decision but since the start of season 2005/06 he has definitely shown signs of physically waning. I actually thought he was Real Madrid’s best player in his first season there but for the last 18 months he’s been a shadow of his former self. Considering that along with the fact he’s won a massive haul of trophies in his career and the ridiculous amount of money they’re offering him I don’t blame him for accepting the offer.

Keane put far more pressure on the lad than Strachan did. I read up on this a bit last night from a decent source and I’ve no hard feelings for anyone involved.

In summary Stokes spoke to Charlton on Friday. Celtic tabled a bid of 1m up front and 1m after appearances to Arsenal which was accepted. Stokes and his father went to Celtic Park on Saturday fully intending to sign.

Financial terms were presented to Stokes - 8k a week. Stokes and father were shocked. Charlton had offered them twice that. Celtic said that’s the wage structure. Stokes said he wanted to sign but he couldn’t take 50% of Charlton’s offer. Celtic said “fine.”

Strachan subsequently said that if he is happy to play elsewhere then fine there’s plenty of people who want to play for Celtic. I agree with him on that and Celtic are operating in a completely different environment to English teams. 8k extra for Stokes wouldn’t have made much difference to anything but it would have meant wage increases across the board for the likes of McGeady and Maloney who deserve to be getting more than Stokes.

Having said that I don’t have much problem with Stokes rejecting the offer when there were far better terms on the table. It seemed like a decent match but it wasn’t to be once the wages became competitive.

LA, LA its a helluva town

Angry LA teammate questions Beckham’s commitment

David Beckham has come under a blistering attack from Los Angeles Galaxy team-mate Landon Donovan just as he prepares to return for action with the Major League Soccer team.

In a new book due out later this month, Donovan claims Beckham has demonstrated little commitment to the Galaxy cause and been a negative influence on the team since the ousting of former coach Ruud Gullit.

“All that we care about at a minimum is that he committed himself to us,” Donovan says in ’The Beckham Experiment’, authored by Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl.

“As time has gone on, that has not proven to be the case in many ways – on the field, off the field.

“Does the fact that he earns that much more money come into it? Yeah. If someone’s paying you more than anybody in the league, more than double anybody in the league, the least we expect is that you show up to every game, whether you are suspended or not. Show up and train hard, show up and play hard.”

Donovan, who is the United States captain and wears the Galaxy armband in Beckham’s absence, also questioned the former England skipper’s leadership abilities, claiming he is too often silent in team meetings.

“Maybe he’s not a leader, maybe he’s not a captain,” he said. “Fair enough. But at a minimum, you should bust your ass every day. That hasn’t happened. And I don’t think that’s too much for us to expect. Especially when he’s brought all this on us.”

Beckham’s first season in MLS was a largely miserable experience as an unbalanced Galaxy team struggled all year and missed out on the play-offs, with Gullit quitting before the end of the campaign.

Gullit’s departure, which came a little over a month after Beckham’s Galaxy debut, is the moment Donovan believes the light went out for the club’s marquee player.

“When David first came, I believed he was committed to what he was doing,” Donovan said. “He cared. He wanted to do well. He wanted the team and the league to do well.

“Somewhere along the way – and in my mind it coincides with Ruud being let go - he just flipped a switch and said: ’Uh-huh, I’m not doing it anymore’.”

Donovan went on to claim Beckham is a bad team-mate, because of his lack of commitment.

“He’s not shown (he’s a good team-mate),” he said. “I can’t think of another guy where I’d say he wasn’t a good team-mate, he didn’t give everything through all this, he didn’t still care. But with (Beckham), I’d say no, he wasn’t committed.”

Evidence of Beckham’s lack of commitment to the Galaxy cause ultimately came when he aggressively pushed for a loan move to AC Milan in January, and then extended it to the point that he missed half of the 2009 MLS season.

That is evidence that he does not care for the league, according to Donovan, who gave up his chance to play in Europe early in his career in order to stay at home.

“My sense is that David’s clearly frustrated, that he’s unhappy and, honestly, that he thinks it’s a joke,” he said.

“I also kind of feel (he has taken the team) for granted. I don’t see dedication or commitment to this team, and that’s troubling.”

Beckham is due to make his return for the Galaxy against the New York Red Bulls on July 16, two days after Wahl’s book is due to be published.

He will line up alongside Donovan in that game, but the striker does not want that to be the case for much longer.

“Let’s say he does stay here for three more years,” Donovan said. “I’m not going to spend the next three years of my life doing it this way. This is f****** miserable. I don’t want to have soccer be this way.”

Thinly veiled “I’m Jealous”.

Yours etc,
GSH.

He should leave him alone. Becks is an alright sort if you ask me.

Landon Donovan is a cock. He gave an interview after the confederations cup final and he was absolutely seething. Quality viewing

Donovan is a winner, Beckham is a loser who sold his soul for yankee gold.

He’s not the worst in fairness. Changed my view on him over time.

Same here, think a lot of hatred for Beckham is down to the fact his wife is a cunt bag of the highest order

I think Beckham’s a rather alright sort too.

I think he went up in most peoples estimations when it emerged he had done the dirt on the wife.

apparently he went after a fan at half time in the game. must be some online coverage of it I might try find
