Yeah, he’s been behind enemy lines a long time.

I burned the ear off him for a while. Sound fella.

He bought it for a song around 10 years ago, closed since the 80s, licence came with it. Has incrementally extended it since it opened in 2017.

I got lost coming from the toilets and ended up a dark room trying to find a way out

Was it mentioned on here that Malzards in Stoneyford KK was Pub of the Year this year. Folks back home say it’s a brilliant pub but have never been.

I’m glad you said that. I worked in Kilkee for three years (2008-11) and never remembered it open!

We sat out the front for a finish. Luckily it was a grand warm evening. It seemed the safest bet as the brother in law is a smoker.

I’ve been in there a couple of times without ever doing much drinking (Pretty sure I was on the Heineken Zeros the last time I was there). It’s an odd setup of a place, one side has a real old-time feel, a tiny space with a low ceiling, the other side then is a big room that feels like a generic rural pub done up in the mid 2000s. Although I’m looking at some pics online here and I’d say they might have done some work on the furnishings in the latter recently.

I was in that place a few years back and it felt like yer man was extending the pub into random rooms in the property as soon as he decided they were structurally sound. :grinning: I’d be curious to see the state of the place now.

Kilkee is a grand auld spot for New Years. Plenty of pubs for the size of the place without it ever being jammers.

I was in Downes’s on Thomas Street in Waterford last night. I’ve been drinking here on and off since I was 16. Great pub for a relaxed, more mature vibe. The place was packed but comfortable. There were a few fellas playing a few vinyls up the other end but the sound wasn’t intrusive. The gaffer (a cousin of horse trainer Henry de Bromhead ) was on duty with his wife, 3 children and one paid barman. Service was good and they insisted on bringing my drink down to me rather than making me wait at the bar.
I had two large bottles, 5 pints and two half ones ( a redbreast and one of their own blends Downes no9). I’d say it’s as good a pub as there is anywhere.

Am I right in saying it’s got its own squash court?

I hope you didnt leave the bog in a mess after you.

And snooker table.

It used to have. Not sure it’s still on the go. It’s got a snooker table that’s good and still in use.

You could eat your dinner off of it.

Would the court have been there in the 70s/80s? I think my auld lad played a few games there if so.
