I know, pal. The hypocrisy of it all.
I’ve a kind of covered in storage area out the back of my house joined on to the house and robins have built their nest on one of my shelving areas. It’s closed in on all sides but there’s a gap over the door they fly in. They seem to be clean enough guests and aren’t shiteing everywhere so far. I’ve a playroom that opens out on to it and yesterday one of them flew in when I opened the door and flew around but back out again.
What should I do with my new red breasted buddies?
Burn the house to the ground, and start over
Main question is really will they leave of own accord once babies are born or spring comes or whatever?
They will but they may come back and nest the next year unless you close the ope
Grand thanks. It’s a tricky opening to close. How long will they be there do you think? Don’t want them shitting all over my u9s gaa gear.
Win that wildlife photo competition that they’re on about on the television…rte, indo or some such. @TheBird will.keep you right, no pun intended
May.
I’m not sure what’s going on here as it’s far too early for the robins to nest. They might be just coming in out of the cold and rain. Perhaps your not in Ireland.
Robins won’t do much harm. They carry away the chicks poo away from the nest, unlike other birds like pigeons. They might have the odd poo themselves of course.
If food is favourable robins can have two or three broods a year. So it’ll be all go. On the other hand they only live for about three years. But they are territorial so another crew may be along.
They like nest boxes so you could entice them outside with a correctly positioned and type of nest box. They don’t like full sun or the boxes with a hole.
Yeah I’m in Ireland. I’ll send a pic later. How would I entice them put into that box?
The answer is that you can’t. You can only take best advice.

You could try put up a couple of boxes to improve chances, but because they are territorial you’ll only get one pair. They always say if you feed them and make them happy over winter, they’ll stay for the summer. Robins are very tame so no cats allowed.
My mother leaves a bowl of porridge oats out for the robins. Every so often there’s one tame enough to eat out of your hand.
A presumably mating pair of Buzzards flying around out the back of the house today. Magnificent creatures.
@KinvarasPassion post about the cuckoo reminded me of my first sighting of a swallow during the week. He was back again on his usual perch. There was no time for a photo opportunity this time unfortunately.
But as all Limerick people know, one swallow doesn’t make a summer.
Shurely he’ll follow a winning Waterford team all the way this year. Although a 7pm throw in might be a bit on the late side for the ould fellow.
Can’t go Saturday sadly. I’d love another night in a nicotine stained room in the Greenhills
Pity, we have the large bottles of Smithwicks cooling for you already in Na Piarsaigh.

Keep them for the Munster final.
