ok here is the situation
TSMC ( taiwan semi conductor manufacturing corporation) are the absolute gold standard in Transistor build and chip manufacturing - they are not a design company but the manufacture designs for ARM, Nvidia, AMD , etc on a massive scale- their production capability is well ahead of anything on US or European soil at the moment.
For China this is something they covet, Chinese semiconductor manufacturing from a leading edge persepctive would be in a ha’penny place as most US manufacturers whilst having a presence in China would never have a leading edge process in developement there due to the various compliacations that brings…
What’s the issue?
The US now correctly believe that abdicating the lead in seminconductor manufactiring capability to an island on China’s doorstep is a national security issue… Sleepy Joe brought in the Chips Act in Q2 this year to release obnoxious amounts of money to support the US semicoinductor industry… he has also now brought in legislation preventing companies who supply equipment to the industry from working on Chinese soil…
this will do 3 things
- it will impact Chinese semicondutor R and D and impact their manufacturing capability that they are really trying to kick off
- it will impact the amount of chips available worldwide as china do produce a load of cheap old shite
- it will make Taiwan’s position even more precarious… China want those fabs, and the US has no choice to protect them until their own domestic industry catches up
TSMC seem to be building a fab in Arizona i see tho, but as @TreatyStones says the business the TSMC run as in they work with multiple customers makes them open to security issues - TSMC would work with a designer who may also use a fab in China to build some of their stuff… so that is a huge risk for the US in that whatever IP TSMC have may be compromised already… sleep joe knows this … but now companies like LAM research and crucially ASML who supply photolithography equipment that enables the pattterning down to <5nm gate width will now not be supplying tech to china… china may have the info bit without the hardware they are scewed

these conpanies need to make money too and stopping them exporting billion dollar equipment when there is a chinese market is a huge call

I also heard, not sure if it’s true, that if you’re American working for a Chinese semiconductor company you’ve been told that you need to quit or your US citizenship will be revoked.
im not sure about that now
what i do know is that any American Field Service type guys who work as contractors on toolsets that are used in the manufacturing process for etching, lithograpgy etc have been told that travelling to a Chinese site is not allowed anymore- now this is a huge problem as the maintenance and install of this type of equipment would not be done by local staff over there…

Ill say one thing tho. we are currently experiencing a downtown in demand so if Chinese production is hit it may not create a global chip supply issue…
2025 is when the US industry expects to “catch” TSMC… but the Chinese want TSMC first
here’s the caveat
TSMC in Nanjing i think and Intel in Dahlian have manufacturing presence in China - it would be “n-3” technology at a minimum tho or at least three generations behind leading edge, basically all the IP is available on google… its the leading edge stuff called Gate All Around Transistors that the race is on to try to manufacture in high volume… BUT the concept of doing right now in the US of A is a long way away
