Buyer’s remorse for what? New Labour got 13 years of power and Campbell got 7/8 years in Downing Street as a result. Worked pretty bloody well for him.

Exactly. Power for power’s sake is all Campbell has ever cared about, and he was only too happy to get it with the help of Murdoch and The Sun.
For him to now try and come across as all principled is hilarious.

If Campbell was still in the driving seat, does anyone seriously think Gove would have so easily side-stepped his co-authoring of a book that called for the NHS to be dismantled? Campbell might have been a cunt but at least the rotten Torys were faced by an opponent who would cut their throats if he had to.

As much as I would criticise the New Labour project, hypocrisy is the only way you get into power with the British FPTP system. You have to appeal to the middle 20% of voters. The Tony Benns and Jeremy Corbyns of the world are totally delusional.
News Corp were going to continue regardless of New Labour bending over for them, so from the perspective of getting power, it was worth it for NL. Defenders of the NL doctrine argue that their actions resulted in the large scale investment in public services around the millennium. So worth it in their eyes, ends justifies the means. The explosion of the deficit as a result of them be damned.
Further, I don’t see Campbell coming out and announcing he regrets sexing up the WMD dossier now, let alone a week after the event like in MacKenzie’s case. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8453116.stm
