BREXIT thread

Say there is a second referendum and it votes to remain.

As Article 50 has already been invoked could the EU just tell them to sling their hooks anyway?

Dunno. But I doubt if they’d fuck em out if a second referendum overturned the original result

Unlikely alright, I suppose. Either way the UK is in the EU’s pocket in perpetuity.

They potentially could but wont. Why would you? - Best to keep em on board and remind them every day of how stupid they are.

I was watching an episode of Al Murrays "Why does everyone hate the English "
Brexit has really brought the reason home

The problem with this is there’s no way a majority of parliament would support no-deal Brexit. By far their best chance is to just take the deal, that’s what the Daily Mail has realised but they’re just not operating in reality.

Question - the Gina Miller case means they need to pass a deal through parliament. Do they need to pass no-deal Brexit through parliament as well?

The Mail have changed their Editor, that is part of what is impacting on their coverage.

It gets better and better. Giving Ian Marshall a cushy job in the seanad was a lovely touch.

I’m not sure about much of that, by that rationale the Tories should be really struggling with their voters dieing off and being replaced by young liberals but alas. The Brexiteers are not going to leave the stage quietly should they lose a 2nd referendum, it would be absolute chaos and I’d be surprised if it wasn’t violent. I may have lost the run of myself completely but I can envisage a 3rd party led by Boris sweeping into power in 2022 should a 2nd refendum be run.
The other problem with a 2nd referendum is it will take 5 months to run which takes us past March, and there are also European Parliament elections in May.

You nailed the big problem there . Another referendum could be incendiary .

I think that febrile scenario, while possible, is not so likely. There is no reason per se why a second referendum could not be held. If nothing else, look at the questions around funding, around the DUP’s role, around Arron Banks, around Cambridge Analytica, and so forth. Equally, Nigel Farage said several times in 2016 that UKIP would be seeking another referendum if there was a narrow Remain win. These people have no intrinsic objection to voting again. They are hypocrites, of course.

To me, saying there could not be a second referendum because there might be violence is a self-cancelling argument. There are quite a few events that might lead to violence, including soccer matches, but possible violence is hardly a sound reason not to hold them.

I think FO’D is onto something. This draft might get through yet. The penny is dropping with certain people that some sort of Brexit, however incoherent, is better than a second vote that would probably remove the possibility of Brexit for all time. The (pro deal) editorial lines of the Express and the Mail are straws in this particular wind. There is no way, given previous vapourings, the Express and the Mail should be endorsing this deal.

Getting it through is clearly better in the short and the medium term – especially for Ireland. But in the long term…?

Such is politics. George Osborne told Dave not to have a referendum.

You are correct, of course, about the difficulties of timescale.

I think Boris Johnson’s tenure as Foreign Minister did him a lot of damage.

That and the fact that he is a fucking idiot.

I think so. But I am not 100% on this facet. There is the scenario – in principle at least – of nothing getting agreed by March 29, 2019 and a crash out on that basis. But I feel few people, beyond John Redwood et al, would countenance this scenario in practice.

God be with the days when being a fucking idiot was a barrier to high office. It appears now its a requirement.

the micks are serious under estimating Mrs May, you can see why Paddy was ruled for 800 years by the British, with 30 lads with sticks in Dublin Castle and a load of informers
