BREXIT thread

proper republicans

Naomi Long supported the backstop and has criticised the deal as not being as strong and certain as the backstop. That doesn’t sound like they’re for turning. Alliance would have to be decimated at the next election for it the deal to be revoked in 4 years time.

90 seats in Stormont. SF and SDLP have 39. People Before Profit have 1, Greens have 2. Only strictly speaking need another 3 to keep it because only really need to break even on 45.

Hopefully this might also spark some vicious infighting between the DUP and UUP also and split the unionist vote.

None of this even makes sense

I thought “just leaving” was what he wanted

If Juncker had said “just leave” all along, the Brits would have wanted back in

The Shinners votes could be crucial on Saturday but no doubt they will do nothing as usual. Who would have thought the Blueshirts would have created a de facto unified country?

What are the chances of this passing the HOC? Serious question

I think this is a really bad deal for NI and Varadkar has made a serious mistake

The default may now be an effective permanent NI backstop as policy, but that is now subject to the four yearly whim of Stormont and can be removed by simple majority

There was a Unionist majority returned at Stormont as recently as the 2016 election

While it may not be likely that a majority of MLAs would vote to change the circumstances should this new deal be approved, it certainly is possible, and if it is, there’s your hard border

I think it will increase sectarian tension and build a siege mentality within Unionism similar to that after the Anglo-Irish Agreement

It also does nothing to build any sense of certainty around the economic conditions for NI and leaves it in effectively a perpetual state of limbo with the possibility of a hard border being imposed being a continual threat

I’m very surprised at SF rowing in behind this because it opens the door to a hard border
