British Open Golf 2014 - Official Thread

The third major of the season begins Thursday at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake in Merseyside, England. Tiger Woods competes in his first major this year and will be hoping for a repeat of his victory the last time the tournament was played here in 2006.

Defending champion Phil Mickelson has been out of sorts but will be hoping a return to the unique challenges links golf provides can spark him into life.

Rory McIlroy leads the Irish challenge. McDowell, Harrington, Clarke, Hoey and Lowry are joined by 21 year old Greystones amateur Paul Dunne who qualified in dramatic circumstance at Woburn.

It’s Shane Lowry’s time. 66-1.

Ah Faldo, you’ve just ruined the rest of the week for me. Whyso?

The title to this thread needs to be amended. Its the Open Championship.

The title is fine - the only change needed is that the “B” should be lower case

I’m finalising my betting portfolio and will post it up later on. It’s only fair I show you who the players to avoid are

Who are you backing this week @Faldo and @carryharry ?

(By you I mean tell me who to throw a few quid on)

Zach Johnson 50/1 is the value. 6th last year after winning the previous week in America, came 2nd on Sunday in America so maybe will go well again this year.

Lowry, Dufner, Cabrera so far and I think I’ll be adding G-Mac. That’ll be it for me then unless Faldo marks one of his as definite.

I’ve 3 done from way back dodgy…
G-mac @28’s bubba @50’s and kaymer @28’s

Out of those I fancy g-mac the most, kaymer won’t be far off and as for bubba he’s either going to win it or miss the cut o_O

I’ll be having a look tonight and adding one or maybe two to this…

I ended up backing two outsiders in Jimenez and luiten @80’s and 100’s more for value than anything else…

Why not lowry, @Faldo. I demand to know

He’s a fat cunt…

Has fuck all form

He’s from Offaly…

Ah I like him infairness juhniallio but his form isn’t at it but then again he’s like bubba in that since…he will either be in the mix or miss the cut

Agreed.

He placed last week.

Absolute cunt.

I won’t mind if he makes me money.

Bets down (all e/w)

Kaymer
McDowell
Zach Johnson
Furyk
Jimenez
Karlsson

@Sandymount Red , who did you back in the end?

Zach Johnson 50/1
Mikko Ilonen 80/1
Jimmy Walker 90/1
Brendon Todd 110/1

Fascinating day. The guys out early had a distinct advantage playing in perfect conditions. McIlroy took full advantage and will be interesting to see if he can avoid one of his second day meltdowns tomorrow, if he can he is in with a huge shout.

Of the later runners Adam Scott and Shane Lowry were the most impressive with Jason Dufner and Bill Haas also catching the eye. The wind is due to pick up and showers are expected over the next few days so I expect the course to play tougher.

Spare a thought for Ernie Els tonight. The Big Easy three putted from about 2 yards out on the opening hole and ended up carding a 79.

Really puts trivial problems in perspective.
