Cars

Na, bro. Dublin is new to me.

The scumbags cant afford cars anymore pal,had my eyebrow done twice when I was 15 if thats any good to you!?
Audis are for pretentious wankers as far as I’m concerned. What’s the story with Saab? Are they gone bust or what? If they are, what is the market like in terms of buying a second-hand one? They have one lovely model which I don’t know the name of.

Audi, Merc, BMW and VW are all out for me - all for pretentious arseholes and far too common. I am a big fan of the S40 for its understated elegance, some of the Japanese manufactures make nice cars - the Honda Accord for instance.
If you like the Accord then pay a visit to a Subaru garage pal. The Subaru Legacy is a really underrated car imo and they are bullet proof reliability wise.

Anyone interested in this beauty?

Hopefully buying a new car in the next week. I drive about 1000kms a week. Have looked at a Jetta diesel, but have heard some terrible stories about major problems with VW’s and how much they’ve cost people. Had looked at a Mazda 6, but a bit pricey in comparison. Accord Euro doesn’t come in a diesel here.

So seriously thinking about a Mondeo Zetec Diesel (I’ve been driving Ford Falcons, Aussie car, for the last few years and they’ve been superb, if a bit dated).

Any thoughts on the Mondeo?

Incidentally, test drove a Toyota Kluger last weekend, which in an ideal world I’d jump at (very reasonably priced here at the moment), absolutely beautiful car / SUV it is, joy to drive. But, doesn’t come in a diesel here, which is nonsensical. I’d be doubling my fuel costs. Can’t believe its not available in diesel in a country where many people drive long distances.

What about those Dacia Dusters? I saw one on the road for the first time this morning.

Mondeo is a fine car to drive.

However the efficiency of the diesel engine is not as good as the VW counterpart. Prob 50/60 miles of a difference in a full tank.

Any real alternative to diesel at the moment. Would be clocking around 1000km per week too and the cost is fairly hefty. Seen some ads for cars running on vegetable oil and gas. Anyone tried anything in Ireland?

Are you commuting from Wexford to Dublin everyday?
That’s a nice hike. Is it all motorway?

Yep, Gorey to pretty much city centre. Motorway / Carriageway for about 80% of the trip. Usually park up in South Dublin and travel the last stretch with the plebs on public transport.

I have a petrol and do a motorway trek a few times a week. You can nearly see the needle for the petrol tank going down as you drive.

The Jetta Diesel is much more reliable than the Passat which are imo not the best. If you are happy with the Jetta then buy it. Very close to the Passat on space, as economical and it will hold its value too. Plus there are less troublesome electrical features in a Jetta to go wrong.

A very good car imo.

( One thing to look out for in most Diesel’s if there is high enough mileage is noise from the Flywheel which is a costly repair. If there is a noticeable change of noise from the car idling when you press & release the clutch then this job is on the horizon )

Excellent advice.

Doing 120-130kmph on a Motorway in a 1.4-1.6 Petrol car for a sustained period & yes you will notice it falling.

Thankfully my motorway driving will be cut down a lot in the coming months so should be as big an issue, but thanks for the kind words.

Cheers, I had seen these lads (http://www.lpg.ie/) advertised on the side of a car at the airport a few months back. Must look into it a bit more. We had an ould Gas system in a Cortina the parents had when I was a child. The car ran off petrol but had Gas in the boot.

I took the sisters Honda Accord to Dublin recently… 2.2 Diesel.

A great mix of comfort and efficiency.
