He was on campaign literature advocating for a yes vote in the gay marriage referendum.
I had the same impression of him as you. My parents‘ and grandparents’ generation regarded him as flawless but it must have been a generational thing. The Late Late Show was a staple in our house growing up and he seemed sneery and patronising to me.

No one is perferct and he, ie the late late, was notably regressing by the end of his reign. The fact he ended up becoming a pomous git still does not detract from the social changes the show spearheaded for decades before. Unlike the never ending carousel of spoofers out there, Bob Geldof, Eamonn Dunphy, Gerry Ryan to name but a few, Gaybo actually genuinely made a difference, and for the better.

People give out about Byrne not shaking hands with Adams but this prick constantly slagged off John Hume in his Sunday Independent column for talking to Adams.

Dunphy wore hats than Clint Eastwood shur in his time. Nobody took any of his positions seriously like his colleague former Senator Harris. They’ve been anti and pro everything in their lifetime.
Gaybo was an unapologetic sneering bollix and for that reason he deserves at least some respect, along with the inevitable hate.

The last few weeks of him on the Late Late Show were actually pretty memorable
There was the Pee Flynn “you try running three houses” interview, Terry Keane spilling the beans and Sinead O’Connor effectively having a breakdown on air
All of that was in the last four or five shows
