Very sad news and he only 66 years old. So retired relatively young at 32. If he was around now at 32 and retiring you’d say he has plenty more miles on the clock. But looking at his record he fought a lot. Read a couple of books about the battles between the 4 of them (Duran, Leonard and Hearns ) and they some great fights.
One down for CP
He retired at 32 essentially because Sugar Ray wouldn’t fight him in a re-match. Didn’t have any interest at that stage in beating up bums.
Sugar Ray wanted a re-match and Marvellous told him to get a life.
Incorrect. Leonard said he was retired for good and wouldn’t countenance fighting Hagler again. Leonard came out of retirement (again) about 18 months later to fight Donny Lalonde, at light heavyweight and super middleweight.
To be brutally honest the fight wasn’t great . Not sure it would have generated the same money again .
They met a few years too late
a lot of people much younger than me eulogising Marvin on Twitter, I’m suspicious.
Like Aretha Franklin, he seems to be picking up a lot of devotees, some people can’t just say nothing
There we go now, the arbiter of what can be liked and said is on again lads, scarper.
I knew you were waiting to throw this out
I didn’t falter.
The meedja are doing a great job of avoiding any anti vax nonsense here…
Summed it up perfectly, realistically you’d want to be 50 or over to have been around for those fights and to have felt the buzz and anticipation in the build up
You’re all over twitter these days.
Ah I need to keep my 10 followers happy.
There’s a lad who was in school with my little brother, he’d be 40 or so, gushing about Hagler there a while ago, not even much of a sports fan, as I said, I’m suspicious,
I was born in 74, I remember McGuigan, anything before that is very sketchy,
They just showing their Orr E Ess Pee…etc
You’re wromg about that.
I’m not. The Leonard v Hagler fight was in April 1987. Hagler and his camp spend over a year trying to secure a re-match. When it wasn’t forthcoming from Leonard, Hagler retired in June 1988. Hagler was 34 at that stage. Leonard after he subsequently came out of retirement and fought Lalonde made noises about a re-match. Hagler had moved to Italy by that stage and had moved on from boxing in his retirement.
“Disgusted with the result, Hagler pursued a rematch instantly, but Leonard refused and retired himself.”
The key passage from below Sugar Ray talking to talksport
yaphet kotto has deflated
In her statement, Kay Hagler said she was the “only person that knows [sic] how things went” and that it “for sure wasn’t the vaccine that caused his death”
