Hilda was some bit of stuff.

O’Malley was Jack Lynch’s man.

Sat on his hands with regard to the North and left it to John Hume to raise awareness in the Irish American community.

He was also involved in the 1977 giveaway election that put the nail in the coffin of the Irish economy,

But like Lynch he was straight, or at least appeared so, which is rare for a Fianna Fáil politician of subsequent years.

whatever floats your boat

Was mate. Was. Fucking hell.

You disturb me at times Art

Except when he set up a party to challenge FF corruption and then went straight into coalition with FF.

Absolute power corrupts, absolutely.

Think there was a four year period between the party being set up and coalition forming. It was their second election at that point and I’d say after their seats being halved, he probably felt they had to enter some kind of government to have any relevance at all

Haughey was asked about the formation of the PDs.

He said that it was a free country and anyone was entitled to form a party, especially those who weren’t able to stay in parties they were already in,

Is Gerry Collins still alive?

If ever there was a yes man.

He must be a big age.

Still alive. Same age as O’Malley. Don’t think either were fans of each other

I recall a clip of Reeling in the Years around those three elections in 18 months circa 1982.

O’Malley and Collins were having fags and discussing the events outside the Dail. Like two fellas you’d see after Mass on a Sunday,

Don’t think you’ll see that happening again with TDs.

Didn’t Collins go up against CJ for the leadership after Jack Lynch got his pink slip

Nope. It was George Colley up against CJH. O Malley backed Colley

Ah yes. Collins was Charlie’s yes man iirc

I think he might have been but remember that all the cabinet (of which Collins was a member) bar Michael O’Kennedy (at 11th hour) backed Colley in that leadership bid. I’d say Collins had some grovelling to do in the aftermath when he realised he backed the wrong horse.

Scrap Saturday always portrayed Collins as a yes man to CJ.

FF used to be box office now it’s limping along most likely in 3rd place
CJH would be livid (assuming he was been looked after himself)

As Irish politicians go, he has a very decent legacy.
