The heavy drinking and alcoholism really set in during the later days of his playing career at West Ham. He regretted the move to West Ham almost as soon as he went there. Didn’t get along at all with Ron Greenwood. Brian Clough wanted to sign him for Derby County but he didn’t want to leave London. Derby went in to win the league in 1971/72.

Forest made a balls of Clough’s retirement too.

There’s no sentiment in football. Or sport in general for that matter.

He turned up for the first few months to Melwood and would be keeping an eye on things. Phil Thompson was on the ‘Quickly Kevin’ podcast recently and said they were all still referring to him as “Boss” so Bob Paisley went to the Chairman and said it wasn’t on after a few months of it. The Chairman had to set Shankly straight.
