Johnny Flaherty RIP

Sorry to hear that. A tasty corner forward when being such a thing could get you killed. He got the decisive goal in the 1981 final.

O Heithirā€™s commentary was great.

Lovely little jig from the man in the suit and tie behind the goal when the ball hit the net

One of the best All-Ireland hurling finals. It had the Mediterranean September air @peddlerscross.

As good a save as Iā€™ve ever seen contained within that clip. It had the hair of Pat Delaney and the sleek style of Liam Currams and the classic crowd shots of people going buck ape with fags in their mouths.

@flattythehurdler will need the smelling salts if he watches that.

And a lovely little bad tempered jab of the hurl during the goal celebration from the galway corner back. Could be Jimmy Cooney?

Saw that, looked like Cooney all right.

Flaherty gave him a little shunt just before that in the celebrations.

An iconic final. Fantastic.

Theres something eminently likeable about Offaly GAA teams. Something not always reflected in Offaly GAA fans.

God rest him. That was an iconic team of iconic hurlers and iconic names.

Pat Delaney and Pat Carroll gave some performances in that final.

Galway had a big lead that day. Offaly didnā€™t hurl at all for first 50-55 minutes.

And a supersub performance from David Faircloughā€¦

My oulā€™ fella had a work colleague from Galway who fumed for years that Johnny Flaherty threw the ball into the Galway net. He did in his hoop throw it into the net, it was perfect handpass over the shoulder, one of the great skills of the game, the sort of thing Limerick people used to eulogise Ciaran Carey for.
