Celtic Non-Matchday Discussion

If the delays are because Howe wants to appoint his own DoF then I think the club are correct to balk at that. Most of the informed speculation seems to suggest that’s the stumbling block.

Celtic should say no thanks to Eddie if that is so . Even if things get sorted the foundation isn’t great .

That said who appoints a DOF and the remit said DOF is an issue .

Is it wise to be doing such huge structural change at this time ??

I’d agree in this case.

DOF really is above a manager or at least parallel. I can see why a manager would have autonomy to pick his backroom and coaching staff but this is a bit bizarre.

Normally wouldn’t be but there’s a change of CEO too and the Head of Football Operations has left too so it’s required.

Could be that it’s about role definition anyway. No reason we couldn’t have a DoF and someone more linked to the first team who could be Howe’s choice. And maybe that’s all they’re working through.

Huge changes at every level .

It’s unprecedented really. There will be some overhaul of players as well as manager and CEO and highly likely a Director of Football.

The reputation of the new manager is more important than usual in that environment. Very hard to get results immediately in that sort of turmoil. Rodgers survived a disastrous start in Gibraltar because of his reputation and because he had a largely settled squad to improve which he did brilliantly. To some extent Strachan struggled to regain his reputation after losing to Bratislava when the squad had been similarly decimated. Clearly other results were a factor but I think the new manager is going to need patience and that’s more likely to be given to Eddie Howe or a random German than to someone seen as less exciting.

Makes it even more important not to rush an appointment also.

I see the Glasgow Rangers v Glasgow Celtic Scottish Cup semi final has been moved from Saturday to avoid a clash with the Royal funeral. Nice for fans of Scottish soccer to have the day to remember the Duke of Edinburgh.

I see Tierney is out for the rest of the season at Arsenal. It means he will have played exactly half their league games in his 2 seasons there. He is solid when he plays and the fans love him but hard to carry a lad like that in a squad, his body looks like it just isn’t up to it.

Glowing reports for Leo Hjelde from John Hughes

Stephen Welsh signed a 4-year deal today.

Has he long left on his contract?

I’m a bit meh on him.

Has done ok in a bad team but I think he’s quite limited.

He doesn’t seem overly quick, he’s not that big or physical but he has been relatively ok so far. I fear he’s going to be a bit of a Darren O’Dea/Stephen McManus type player who comes in during a bad situation and looks good because the players who were playing before were going through a bad spell so it enhanced his actual level and gradually over time he gets found out.

Best thing for Welsh would be spending a full season on loan at Aberdeen or Hibs or a club like that and see how he gets with being a regular and how he develops.

I’m kind of in the middle of thinking he’s an absolute disgrace and feeling sorry for him.

Looks like he could be a man fighting a few demons.
