It’s madness if we don’t have an option at a discounted price.
I don’t think the wages would be a huge issue with out resources, he supposedly on £40k a week at Brighton but he wants to make the deal happen so I’d say a £30k a week deal would be enough for him to sign and that’s well within our reach.
£2m for a year is effectively getting him for free - just paying his wages (52 * 40k is over 2m). Or paying half his wages and a £1m loan fee for a season. It’s all just the same money. But we can’t bring him in on 40k a week. As keen as he is to play for Celtic, he’s not going to choose to take a 25% pay cut a year before he has to, if a deal is worked out.
You’d think Duffy will be a very good signing but interesting to see how he does in a team which is so dominant considering he has played most of his career at fairly backs to the wall style teams
His heading is really top class and it’s an area Celtic struggle with at the moment so he will fill that gap. Ajer is a lanky chap but can’t head a ball. Jullien is good on set pieces and in half his games, in the other half he gets bullied by anyone physical. Duffy should be well able to dominate and allow the other two to sweep behind him (assuming we go three at the back).
He’s not the greatest with the ball at his feet, but he shouldn’t be expected to do too much as Ajer/Jullien will be better at that beside him. There is a concern that he doesn’t like to push up with the rest of his defence because he’s concerned about his pace and he doesn’t really want to have the ball at his feet around the halfway line either. But again, I think if he’s playing in a 3 with defenders who have a bit of pace that will help him.
True, just find this weird. Probably wants to go with the lad White who is more a footballing type but Duffy has done little wrong. Would because great signing for many EPL clubs.
Potter didn’t really upgrade them massively from where they were under Hughton. Maybe a slightly better brand of football. Duffy would be a great signing for Celtic. Scores a few goals from Set-Pieces too!
Celtic are set to announce the signing of Shane Duffy, after the centre-back signed off on his loan move to Parkhead.
The defender will join up with Neil Lennon’s side when he returns from Republic of Ireland duty next week, having agreed his temporary switch from Brighton.
The 28-year-old was expected to seal the deal in Scotland but had to do the deal remotely because he would have broken Ireland’s COVID-19 squad bubble had he travelled from Glasgow.
Duffy got the all-clear from his medical on Tuesday morning and completed the paperwork before flying out to Sofia with his Irish team-mates, as they prepare to take on Bulgaria in Thursday’s Nations League clash.
Duffy will then return to Ireland for Sunday’s home clash with Finland before he heads to Glasgow.
The experienced defender could make his Celtic debut away to Ross County after the international break.
