Celtic have agreed a fee with Sunderland for Adam Matthews.
What kind of fee?
I liked the cut of Matthews a couple of years ago but he seems to have regressed since
They bid £1.5m the other day and Celtic wanted £3.5m apparently so rejected it. They must have met somewhere in between - he’s out of contract next summer.
I don’t think he regressed an awful lot but he didn’t really push on either. Was excellent defensively in some big games, notably Barca, but didn’t seem as comfortable defending when we were set up more offensively. Stands off his winger quite a bit. I imagine his departure is more related to an inability to agree a new deal than anything else. Ultimately he was our second best right back so hard not to listen to offers at this stage of his contract.
Fee for Matthews is £2m according to STV.
Watched another Janko video this evening, not the same one I’d seen before. Impressed with his strength anyway and his first instinct when he wins the ball back is to attack every time. Crossing looks a bit of a mixed bag but Matthews wasn’t a great crosser of the ball anyway.
Meh, thought we could have got a bit more but so be it. How much did we pay for Janko?
Haven’t seen a fee mentioned. Doubt it was very much. Between him and Boyata we certainly haven’t spent more than the Matthews fee. I think Matthews is worth a bit more than £2m but I imagine we made an early call based on the likelihood of agreeing new terms for his next contract - he had been presumably on decent money after joining on a pre-contract. Same as Ledley and we probably weren’t prepared to offer similar terms for the renewal.
Matthews has officially signed for Sunderland.
A few players went on loan today - McMullan is gone to St Mirren for a year. McManus and Duffy have joined Alloa for 6 months and a year respectively.
Hope we get Ciftci signed up soon. If he os to join then it’s imperative we get him in for our CL qualifying campaign. Pierre is his agent and said yesterday that he has turned down Wigan and wants to join Celtic. I hope we don’t spend too long haggling over a price because it seems inevitable we’ll bid more for him eventually.
I’m behind the Citftci signing. I think McMullan is our best youth player right now. Hope he gets on well.
The talk is Dundee United accepted a £1m bid from Wigan for Ciftci but are demanding £2m from Celtic.
