Celtic To Wear Remembrance Day Jerseys

Oct 29 2008

EVERY SPL team will wear special Remembrance Day jerseys next month.

The tribute will take place after poppy appeal organisers wrote to the 12 clubs asking them to wear the one-off kit - and all agreed.

Some clubs will have a small red poppy woven in to team jerseys on the day. Others will make their own tribute with players sporting a stick-on poppy.

Referees, their assistants and fourth officials will also join in the tribute by wearing a poppy on their outfits.

The jerseys will be worn in SPL matches to be played over the weekend of November 8-9. Remembrance Sunday falls on November 9 this year.

A spokeswoman for Poppyscotland, who used to be known as the Earl Haig Fund Scotland, said: “All the SPL clubs are involved and all their players will wear the special Scottish poppy which will greatly increase public awareness of the poppy appeal.”

Last year, Hearts wore a special strip when they played a Remembrance Day match against Aberdeen at Tynecastle.

The decision was taken to honour the players of the legendary Hearts squad of season 1914-15, who died in World War I.

The club’s entire first team squad had enlisted with the 16th Royal Scots, a battalion known as McCrae’s Own.

Seven died in service. The strip worn by the Hearts players in 2007 had the names of the dead - John Allan, James Boyd, Duncan Currie, Ernest Ellis, Thomas Gracie, James Speedie and Harry Wattie - embroidered into the sleeve. The jersey also had a poppy on the chest.

Remembrance Day commemorates the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians since World War I.

Poppyscotland support war veterans and their dependants in Scotland. Last year the appeal raised a record s1.76million

A disgusting, war mongering, monarchistic charade of the highest order, this poppy business.

Buying a poppy pays for snooker tables for ex-paras.

Well they are a British club are they not?

Perhaps they could wear a white poppy as symbol of peace.

I’m nto too bothered about this. Can’t wait for the Easter Lilly version though.

yes - does that mean they should support imperialism though ? you can be british & be against british foreign policy:rolleyes:

You can i suppose, but the fact that they advrtised in the first place shows they are not and are loyal to both Queen and country and its foriegn policy, like most John Bulls.

no , it shows the PLC is out of touch with the fans -

Alex Salmond urges Scots to wear poppies with pride

The First Minister today urged Scots to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by Armed Forces personnel by wearing a poppy with pride.

Alex Salmond was speaking ahead of a reception tonight at Stirling Castle to launch this year’s Scottish Poppy Appeal.

The castle was lit up in red to mark the occasion.

At the launch, Mr Salmond is expected to be presented with a poppy from Flanders Fields by Bob and Jem Wright. Their 27-year-old son, Corporal Mark Wright, was killed when a mine exploded as a Chinook helicopter attempted to rescue a stranded platoon of paras in Afghanistan.

Earlier this month coroner Andrew Walker said the Ministry of Defence “should hang their heads in shame” over the lack of equipment and money that led to his death.

Mr and Mrs Wright are presenting the poppy to Mr Salmond on behalf of all the families who have lost relatives in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr Salmond said: "Tonight we remember that the way we live today is because of the bravery and fortitude of our forces, and the sacrifices they are willing to make on our behalf.

“I hope that over the next week, as a nation, we will all take the time to honour their memory and wear our poppies with pride.”

Mr Salmond described Poppy Week as being “an important time of remembrance and reflection”.

He said: “It is a time when we give pause for thought and pay tribute to the many Scottish servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our country.”

He added that this year had added significance, as it marked the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

“It is the sacrifice of all those who have served in battle which has preserved our values, protected our way of life, and enabled us to enjoy the freedoms which so many of us take for granted today,” Mr Salmond said.

He also highlighted action by ministers to help veterans, stating: "The Scottish Government is determined to do all it can to care and provide for the men and women who protect us.

"That is why, in November, we extended NHS priority treatment to include those who have served in the Armed Forces.

"We have established a 500,000 pilot to spearhead improved mental healthcare for veterans.

“We have also established, for the first time, a Scottish Veterans Fund, providing 240,000 over the next three years to assist our veteran community.”

Feck that anyway. It’s only a symbol but it’s a fucking shite symbol to be wearing. Hope McCourt rips his off.

I’ll be emailing the club in protest about this. Ridiculous shit altogether.

Sticky one this for me. I don’t agree on money being raised for British army soldiers/para’s etc who served their country with such shame up in the North but my Great Grandfather died from wounds he got in the battle of the Somme.

This is an outrage

A conundrum, British Club after all though so I guess they’ll have to tow the line.

why would a football club have to tow the line?

the problem with this is that the poppy represents all britains wars including Ireland & Iraq etc & the money raised goes to ex soldiers drinking clubs

they should wear a non political rememberance symbol

Why wouldn’t they? Its for soldiers fighting under the British flag, Celtic are a Club in Britain. Hang on, let me get you a map.

Right, its not a great map, but you get my drift, Glasgow is there, in Britian.

As I said, its a conundrum because Celtic Football Club see themselves are Irish, and I can respect that. However, they are a British based Club, no matter what way you wish to look at it. To refuse to wear would be quite the stand. I’ll be interested to see how this plays out.

Im sure a lot of people in scotland see themselves as scottish & not british & also people in Britain can be against imperialism - is that too hard for you to understand ?

probably seeing as you think Wolfe Tone is a criminal & have previously recognised the right of British Courts in Ireland

Not at all, you’re just making things up now, but thats ok, I’m familiar with your methods, they’re funny, like you.

Anyhoo, the point remains, irregardless of what people wish to be different, Scotland is in Britain, and they suckle at the teat of Westminister. I’m sure the majority could vote for a change if they wished, isn’t that whats great about a democracy in these modern times.
