Celtic Transfers Summer 2010

Gary Hooper has agreed his personal terms and is off for his medical. He’ll be the addition to Wednesday’s squad for Braga. I hate those cunts and their stupid cliff at one end by the way. Hooper is world class.

Juarez has gotten all his paperwork sorted and will be involved in midweek.

Talks with David James have been cancelled. He got married yesterday and I imagine he was doing a little bit of riding. We certainly need a new ‘keeper anyway and quickly too.

Peter Luccin is training at Celtic. This chap was a key player in many a Football Manager or Championship Manager campaign. That’s an awful lot of midfield players we’re looking at now. He spat on Hartson during a UEFA Cup game during the Seville season. Rocko and I watched that game in the now defunct Sports Bar on O’Connell St in Limerick before heading into Ted’s afterwards.

It is still open just under a different name…didn’t a malasian lad wipe your eye the same night

Any idea what sort of player Hooper is? Irishman and Celtic fan Michael O’Connor tipped him to be SPL’s top scorer though his record ain’t great though he seems to be finding net more regularly.
Always though Zaluska was more than decent at Dundee United Bandage. Was I just looking through tangerine tinted glasses?
Anyone know if Braga match is on tv?

The game has not been picked up by TV yet, as far as I know. I imagine there’ll be an eleventh hour deal organised to show it.

Hooper’s record is quite good, is it not? 50 goals in 90 appearances with a struggling championship side or something? He’s 5 foot 9 inches, quite strong and also quick according to reports.

I haven’t been impressed with Zaluska at all. Stays rooted to his line all the time, doesn’t organise the defence and poor on crosses. No more than a back up, in my opinion.

We still need another centre back, a left back and either Bellamy or Keane to partner Hooper.

Off the top of my head is record is something like this
2006-2008 Southend United appearances32. goals 2
2007 → Leyton Orient (loan) appearances 4 goals 2
2008 → Hereford United (loan) appearances 19 goals 11
2008– Scunthorpe United appearnaces 80 goals 43

Appears as if he didn’t like the Southend United air.

I won’t argue with you about goalkeepers (surprised to see you criticizing a keeper. Sky Sports said there was some sort of goalkeepers union?). In return I would appreciate it if you backed me up on whatever viewpoint I express on props in rugby as I’m an expert in that area.

Ah he was only a pup at Southend Larry, I wouldn’t read too much into it. He’s quick and a good finisher according to youtube.

I’m not convinved that a keeper is what’s absolutely required either. I’d concentrate elsewhere first and would certainly prefer we went for a younger keeper than James.

You’re underestimating the importance of a good 'keeper, in my opinion. While James might not necessarily be the best option, he’s way, way better than Zaluska.

Is Boruc gone then or what? Did he not hold the club to ransom in the end demanding a pay off of some description?

He’s gone but he waived any money he was entitled to out of the sale. Wonderful gesture.

Juarez has just had his signing press conference and announced he wants to win the Champions League with Celtic.

Is Luccin ex Marseille and Celta Vigo?

Good player in his day that lad.

Yes, that is he.

I just wouldn’t prioritize it over other positions and i’d prefer we made more of an investment than throwing hefty wages at James.

What other positions do you think we’re lacking in? Lennon said GK, CB, LB and ST.

I’ll take your suggestions for GK at your convenience.

I’d say we’re short in the areas above plus central midfield. Depends on how likely Campbell/Bullard/Luccin are but before they join I think we need a couple of central players. I’d also like to swap out a striker for another. Fortuné would be one I’d let go.

That Uruguayan keeper in the World Cup looked pretty good. There’s also a young keeper at Crumlin United by the name of Smith that I like the look of.

The likes of Westwood at Coventry is probably too expensive for our budget but I’d prefer we went for that sort of keeper. Even ask for a price on Fabianski - crisis of confidence last season but nearly every keeper goes through a spell like that. Lonergan at Preston and Gerken at Bristol City both look competent and cheap.

I don’t know, Rocko. We’re replacing a complete class act - I wouldn’t be happy with either of the last two mentioned. Westwood looks a good prospect but he’s outside our price range.

Speaking of Artur Boruc; he spoke to the Herald in Scotland tonight in his first interview since leaving Celtic.

Clenching his fist to his chest, he added: “The club and the fans will always be here, close to my heart. Along with my family and my girlfriend, Celtic are a part of me now. It was an honour to play there.”

is Hooper any way good??

Yeah they’re not replacements for Boruc but James isn’t either IMO.

So it’s a case of:

  1. break the bank to replace him. Not going to happen
  2. take a punt on a youngster. Not likely to be successful, we can use youths for this
  3. get in a halfway competent replacement for cheap. Saves money for elsewhere and they may turn out to be more than fine.
  4. get in a stopgap. Short-termism that leaves us in the same position next year and leaves us reliant on an older keeper more prone to injuries etc.

I’d prefer to get a stop gap 'keeper of proven quality that would make us nailed on for the league this season. I think our goalkeeping situation needs to be sorted out as a priority.
