Heading over to Edinburgh this weekend and getting a train to Glascow to watch the match.Anyone know what the chances are of picking up a ticket on the day? Failing that could someone recommend a hun free zone where I could watch the game and sample the atmosphere.
To watch it you really need to head to the Gallowgate or an Irish bar to guarantee no huns. City centre will be boring enough - no colours of any sort in the bars. But Gallowgate is 3 minutes in a taxi or a healthy 15 minute walk from the centre and any of the pubs there like Bairds will be lively enough afterwards anyway though theyâll empty out a bit for the game itself.
Iâd say youâve a reasonable chance of getting a ticket in Jurys or somewhere. Not as many season tickets as there used to be so more tickets available to the general public. Plus there arenât as many flying over from Ireland with the recession so you have a chance of getting one. Wouldnât be banking on it but if you look hard enough you should get one.
How much should one pay for a bus, ferry (belfast), night in hotel, ticket combo, rock?
Thanks for that.
+1 to all that, whiplash. Get down to Juryâs Inn on Jamaica Street relatively early - 10 minute stroll down from Queen Street station. The hotel bar will be serving from early doors and there will be plenty of Irish and other diaspora members congregating there from early morning and some will have stayed the night before. You often see/hear the odd story of a lad thatâs missed a flight/boat or whatever and there could be a supportersâ club with a ticket or two to spare. Donât be shy - approach anyone and everyone and youâll have a chance of getting fixed up. Make an imaginative and funny âticket wantedâ sign to strengthen your chances. Go the Gallowgate to watch it if youâre unsuccessful - Hagieâs Bar is my new personal favourite.
Cheers banage
Depends where youâre going and whether you consider it value for money, gola.
Unfortunately the great Clan Carney wonât be playing in Glasgow this weekend as theyâre in the Players Lounge or the Vaults I think, canât remember which one.
This is my favourite ballad these days and I know DB was moved by it in Haughanâs/Hagieâs the last day.
I was just thinking that weâll have an absolute raft of players making their derby debuts on Sunday. Itâs incredible really that the team which played in the last derby in May has undergone such a makeover, notwithstanding the fact that a rebuilding job was required. Wilson is the only player that started in May that is expected to play on Sunday and he would have been considered an unlikely starter until he came in for Cha and performed well on Sunday.
Team from May with current status in brackets:
Boruc (Fiorentina),
Hinkel (out for the season with a cruciate knee ligament injury),
Wilson (still at Celtic),
OâDea (on loan at Ipswich),
Naylor (Cardiff City),
Kamara (returned to Fulham after loan spell),
NâGuemo (returned to Nancy after loan spell),
Brown (still at Celtic but out for 10 weeks with a foot injury),
McGeady (Spartak Moscow),
FortunĂŠ (West Brom),
Keane (returned to Spurs after loan spell).
Weâll have most of the following in line for their derby debuts: Forster, Majstorovic, Izaguirre, Cha, Ledley, Ki, Juarez, Stokes and Hooper.
Some turnaround really.
To be honest while much of it has been justified there have been far too many transfers since Strachan first took over. Canât even blame the managers themselves as they all inherited underperforming squads. Mowbray probably made more changes than were required and seemed to determined to change everything just for the sake of it. His replacement of McDonald with Rasmussen was a case in point. He didnât seem to rate Rasmussen, just felt McDonald was a Strachan player.
Even Hinkel from that XI who is still at the club would be highly unlikely to be playing as the club seemed determined to freeze him out.
Massive game for these players. Impressed with the performance last Sunday and with most of their recent efforts but performances like we got against Utrecht away etc arenât a distant memory. This is how theyâll be judged as a team. Little doubt Lennon will have them fired up for it. Question is whether they can deliver.
Indeed Rocko. 16 SPL wins on the bounce is impressive, irrespective of any barbs about quality of the league, but weâve floundered in other competitions. I have faith in Lennon because I think heâs got the strong, single minded mentality required to make a success of the job (compared to a hapless, naive Mowbray for example) but weâve been well below par against Ross County in the cup semi-final at the back end of last season and also away to Braga and Utrecht earlier in this campaign.
Some would argue that Sunday is the acid test and that Mayâs win was a âdead rubberâ given their league win was already secured but Iâm encouraged by the 100% record in the league so far, especially the way we overcame the obstacles last Sunday. You can tell that Lennonâs infusing a good spirit and togetherness in the squad but it remains to be seen how tactically astute he is.
Iâm interested to see what way the huns set up. Theyâve more often than not been very defensive at Celtic Park and played Miller up front on his own but they were more adventurous in May - as mentioned though, the stakes werenât that high for that game. Theyâre scoring goals domestically and in good form but I donât think theyâll make it an open game. Probably Miller through the middle with Lafferty and Naismith wide of a 5-man midfield and Davis, Edu and McCulloch (if fit) in the midfield.
This derby has all the relevance of Bristol Rovers v Bristol City these days. I see the SPL Hall of Famers aka Middlesboro struggling very badly in the seond tier of English football.
Yeah I think thatâs how theyâll line up as well. I think Edu can be got at and Lafferty is more of an impact player than an effective wideman in a 5 man midfield. If we can get our wide players going forward then Lafferty and Naismith might become liabilities. Being boring huns theyâll track back a fair bit but theyâre not naturally defensive so there are opportunities to exploit that. Particularly if Paddy plays a part.
Iâm not reading much into the last derby game at all. I expected us to win that game as we had more to play for (well Lennon did anyway) and were at home. This will be a far more edgy game and unfortunately our record under Lennon hasnât been great in close games until last week. Weâve tended to dominate against inferior opposition and while we have strung together a very impressive winning streak itâs not worth anything if we fall over against decent opponents. I hope and expect that Utrecht away was an abomination while Braga away was certainly too soon for this team.
Iâd imagine the ranking of number of posts on Celtic related topics for the past 12 months would be something like this:
- Bandage
- KIB Man
- Rocko
over the last 12 months Iâve safely commented more on Glasgow Celtic/paedo related topics than Bandage who lost his way there for a good while. Doubt the portly chic is even in the top 5.
TFKCSC,
Weâre due back into Dublin around 6pm on Sunday.
Where are we going for pints?
Anthony Stokesâ pub have Clan Carney on stage at around 8pm - they provided the entertainment in Hagieâs, Gallowgate when we were over for the Hibs game last month and they were quite a treat.
I think this would be a good option in the event of a victory. Please state plans / suggestions in this thread.
Meeting NCC and others for pints in Malahide
Salubrious Malahide?
Will there be a band?
