Champions League - Round of 4

That’s a load of rubbish.

It was a borderline call.

Milito was clearly onside another time in the first leg and clean through.

Barca play a pressing game that starts with their forwards. They pin teams into their own half and win the ball back there. That means their whole team is on the front foot and the defence has a very high line. That’s their whole philosophy on the game. He’s advocating that they defend like Inter, which would involve the whole team playing 40 yards deeper. You can’t compare them because they’re two completely different approaches and Barca aren’t going to change their entire game to playing a more patient, counter attacking style.

Bobby Moore, Alan Hansen, Norman Hunter…

No mention of Tony McCoy and Brian O’Driscoll. Must have it missed when
I was watching Townsend and Southgate give a reasonable, level-headed
assessment of proceedings.

“Bobby Moore, Alan Hansen, Norman Hunter…”

Never heard of them. Who are they?

Lets hope Inter beat Bayern in the final now. The Champions league is tough to retain and its a testament to United for making the final two years in a row.

Yeah I am talking about tonight’s performance. Sorry, don’t follow.

I accept that Inter did what they needed to in the first leg but judging tonight’s efforts as a heroic defensive performance is a bit much given that they lost. They started with a two goal start and gave one away. It’s not that it wasn’t a good achievement but they didn’t keep a clean sheet, didn’t keep the ball and didn’t manage a worthwhile shot. I’ve no issue with praising them for that they did in Milan but it’s easy to go over the top about Inter advancing tonight and praising the fuck out of a 90 minutes that was limited and dangerously unambitious.

Agreed on Pique. Just so far wrong.

I know what you are saying - in that Barca may not be as good of an attacking force if they played such a defensive manner.

But it is a drawback to them.

First time Inter have reached the final since 1972 when they jammed their way through a Parkhead penalty shoot out after a goalless 210 minutes.

They never seem to be able to appreciate this difference. What they’re suggesting is that Barca should defend like Inter and still keep their attacking game. If the game becomes 18 a side they might manage it. It’s the root of most of their idiocy though, the basic point that adopting a playing style will involve a trade off.

You know Dunphy is stumped when he has to bring out the spectacles to analyse a replay…

I think some of you lot have caught a case of the Gunphys here. The amount of shit being spouted is unreal.

Messi is some waster, keep Zlatan on and the tie is won.

I think you’re being harsh. The emphasis is not on losing the match but on not losing the tie, which they ultimately didn’t do.

Remember they were down to 10 men, against the best attacking team in the world and they limited them to very few chances.

I think that deserves credit.

I do take your point on Inter not being interested in playing football but this is the second leg. And it is a two legged tie.

Zlatan really is so piece of shit…he’s not on the same wavelength as the likes of Messi and Xavi…2 seriously bogey
signings by Pep - chigrinsky(?!) and zlatan…

Some great video analysis from Dunphy there. Messi on the ball-gives it to Xavi-goes wide to Pedro. “Now stop it there look at Messi bottom of the picture. He’s standing 35 yards away from the ball exactly where Inter want him. He should have been playing wide.”

Eh he just passed it there Eamonn.

Yes, it’s so frustrating to listen to. Maybe they should have a flat back four on the edge of their 18-yard line to ‘defend properly’ then a huge empty space for the the next 60 yards before they have all their attacking players still playing their normal attacking/pressing/passing game up in the opposition half. This would easily allow them to avoid having to trade off.

Was Mourinho celebrating in front of the Barca fans or the Inter fans does anyone know?

Barca fans presumably.

Bill actually knows more from his bit of research than the other tits on that ‘‘panel.’’

Astounding levels of ignorance.

what a glorious glorious night to be Italian or follow Italian football- that was one of the most beautiful performances Ive ever seen - Forza Cattanaccio- Forza Italia- Forza Roma

Finally a normal bit of banter. The Inter fans were in one corner of the stadium in the top tier. No matter where Mourinho went he would have been in front of Barca fans.
