Clare v Cork - GAA Hurling All Ireland Senior Championship 2013 Final - Replay

Saturday 28th September - 5.00pm

time to look forward

Cork by 4.

Why do we need a replay thread? Surely the final thread encompasses the replay?

We’ve a fucking long wait. It should be next Saturday.

That would be very harsh on Clare to play it the same day as the U21 Final.

Ah Kev, come on, . Dont tell me that Cork are that desperate to win and afraid of Clare that Cork would want to play Clare on the same day as the Clare U21’s compete in an All Ireland?

New game, new chapter.

In fairness, three weeks is too long a wait for the replay, it could have been held next Sunday and the under-21 final moved back to Saturday the 21st… Three weeks kills the momentum completely both for the teams themselves and in terms of public interest. All the talk in the week leading up to the replay will still be about the football final and it’ll be the Thursday or Friday at least before people remember there’s still a hurling championship to be won. Whereas the hype and publicity could have been maintained throughout the week and reached manic proportions by next Sunday if it was only a week’s gap.

Certainly last year’s hurling replay suffered from the three week gap.

Christ Antrim could barely keep their players attention for the semi final, if you put it back a further three weeks they wouldnt be able to field a team!

Think of the logistics Sid. It’s not feasible.

If we’re in the realm of the hypothetical then there should just be extra-time. I know there’s an economic motive for having replays but it should be settled on the day. You’re right about three weeks being way too long of a gap.

U21 should be moved to following Saturday. Harsh on Antrim, but the Senior is the big show.

As Sid alluded to, momentum of a cracking season is going to be completely lost.

Funny enough though I think it gives Cork a better chance of winning.

Agree completely about the stupidity of a 3-week gap to the replay and the loss of momentum. I made the same point last year too so I did*.

  • that turn of phrase was a little nod to Davy Fitzgerald so it was.

Teams seem more pushed on the 5pm throw in than the 3 week delay

Not sure teams lose momentum - they need a week to recover and then the extra two weeks allows them to be built back up again.

Who would have won on Sunday if there was extra time - separate argument to be made that a final needs a winner on the day

I just think a 3 week wait for a replay is conceptually daft. I mentioned last year that World Cups and European Championships with multiple games are run off over such a timeframe yet these teams, who were primed, now have a long time to get ready again. Not sure what relevance my comparison with football tournaments has, mind.

No no no, replays are absolutely fantastic. They could have scheduled it a better sure but there are few enough games as it is. And a replayed final is better again. The more exposure the better. (plus, mo money mo money mo money)

None at all?

I agree to an extent, without harping in about it I’d change the whole thing and have more games in a smaller window.

But this break is stupid. Even the stupid Aussies think its stupid. So that means its Uber stupid.

I think it would suit Clare more to be back on the horse again. Instead they have a 21 match they could win by 15-20. That’s arguably a negative.

Cork have probably 3-4 sessions to work on a plan and maybe another 2-3 to fine tune and taper. Clare can’t even think about senior till next min/tues.

The break is not ideal but the fixtures were made and there’s nothing can be done about it so really there’s no point commenting on it, it’s not stupid it’s just unavoidable and I’m sure both teams will get on with it. The 21s game is not ideal for Clare but I imagine they’ll be taking off Collins and Kelly if at all possible with 10 to go if they are relatively comfortable. The sheer enthusiasm with which those lads play would suggest that another game will only bring them on. I have to say you have to admire Davy Fitz for the way he has managed and shared players involved in the 21s all year, he seems to have done a fantastic job of facilitating players on both teams.
