Club Championships 2010

Kelly goal helps Celts to five point win over Gaels
06 May 2010

Cootehill Celtic 1 - 10
Cavan Gaels 0 - 8

Cootehill Celtic got their second win of the season with a well deserved 5 point win over a battling Cavan Gaels side in Terry Coyle Park on Saturday last. Apart for the opening ten minutes where they were slow to get out of the traps, the Celts were full value for their victory and were for the most part in control of the game. The visitors also had to contend playing with 14 men for the final few minutes of the game when Sean Fitzpatrick got a second yellow card but even then the Gaels never looked like narrowing the margin enough to take anything from the game.

While Cootehill had a sluggish opening ten minutes, they still enjoyed plenty of possession but couldn’t convert it into scores and kicked three wides in quick succession early on before wing forward Brendan McCrudden opened the scoring with a fine point from 30 yards out after 8 minutes. The visitors recorded another wide before Cavan Gaels responded with a point and full forward Alan O’Riordan pointed a free two minutes later to put his side into the lead for the only time in the match and that was also the last score from the home side until the second half. A free from Mark Mullen tied the game again at the end of the opening quarter as Cootehill began to show their dominance around the middle of the field with Paul McCarney, John McCutcheon and Brian Sherlock all to the fore. Another Mullen point put the Celtics back into the lead but further opportunities were missed with some poor shooting accounting for two more wides.

A pointed free from the boot of Neil Kelly put Cootehill two clear and wing back Sean Fitzpatrick got on the end of a flowing move to fire over a neat effort from the left wing. The Celts continued to keep their opposition on the back foot collecting a lot of the breaking ball around the middle third of the field and any attacks the Gaels did mount, the Cootehill defence dealt with comfortably, corner back Joshua Hayes in particular had an excellent game on danger man Martin Dunne and kept last year’s Senior Championship top scorer very quiet over the course of the match. Brian Sherlock stretched his side’s lead to three points with a fisted effort sailing over the bar after a powerful run through the heart of the Gaels defence, leaving Cootehill Celtic with five points to Cavan Gaels’ two at half time.

Cavan Gaels improved considerably after the break and opened the second half with two frees from Dunne to cut the gap down to the minimum. An impressive catch from full back Barry McGahan when he was under pressure in his own square started off an excellent passing move from the Celts which went the entire length of the field before Cathal McCabe got on the end of it and fired over the bar to keep them in front.

The Celts stuck a crucial blow in the 42nd minute of the game as Ciaran Fox put John McCutcheon through on goal and the county defender waited until he drew Gaels full back Mark Leddy out and slipped the ball over to Neil Kelly who rounded the keeper and fired to the net opening up a five point margin. The Cootehill defence had to be alert a few moments later with Aidan McCabe and Joshua Hayes combining to deny Dunne a shot at goal from close range. The Gaels did answer back with a point shortly after but that was cancelled out by a point from Damien Sherlock after an accurate pass from his brother Brian found him in plenty of space. A long ball from a Ciaran Fox free found Brendan McCrudden who collected his own break and pointed on the turn for his second point of the afternoon to push the gap out to six.

Another Cavan Gaels free was cancelled out by a second point from Brian Sherlock when the mid fielder was happy with to settle for a point and fisted over when through on goal. With the game entering its final ten minutes, a point from Daniel Graham brought the gap back to five and the pressure on the Celtics was increased as Fitzpatrick got his second yellow card and Cootehill were down to 14 men and another Gaels white flag left four between the sides. But the Celtics defence held firm in the final few minutes and kept the home side at bay and actually finished the match on the attack and forced a 40 metre free which Mullen pointed to ensure a five point winning margin as the Gaels efforts fizzled out in the end.

The result meant Cootehill were picking up their second win of the league after last week’s dramatic victory over Drumgoon while the Gaels remain bottom of Division 2 suffering their third defeat of the campaign.

Live 95fm County SFC Group 1

Claughaun 3-7 St. Patricks 2-9

Monaleen 4-9 0-2 St. Kierans

Two basketcase results, Kierans hammered Claughaun last week by 16 to 3. Kierans then go and get hammered by Monaleen while Claughaun mug Pats with 2 goals in the dying stages of the game. Drom are now sitting pretty on top of the group with what would have been considered their two toughest games played already. Should be a great battle between the rest of the teams to secure the other two spots when the championship resumes in August.

Only got some of those Sid.

Ballerin 1-07 St Oliver Plunketts Greenlough 1-16 - The Plunketts pulled away in the 2nd half
Lissan 0-10 Castledawson 1-15 - Castledawson on top throughout
Foreglen 0-14 Ballmaguigan 1-10 - Foreglen squeak it in a tense finish.

You geting to many games Link? The Senior seems to be very even all over, no team with two wins out of two. The ould fella reckons Fennelly is the man to lead the Shock to the top this year.
Good to see ye bouncing back after a bad first day out.

We were lucky eneogh to win on the night, missing six of our first 15 due to injuries, exams and one lad in America isnt helping things, glad of the win anyway.I was at six games over the Weekend,Mooncoin and Gowran was a bit of a thriller,Carrickshock are flying along,Ballyhale just did eneogh,Henry looked a little unfit and didnt have much effect on proceedings against O Loughlin Gaels.

Locke, am I rightin saying that no team have won two matches in the senior in Kilkenny. Ballyhale will hammer all befre them agin though when they start training. I have been at a couple of games, the standard is piss poor, suppose it will be another few months before it really gets going though.

Ballinora beat Bantry 2-09 to 1-09. Very good game, 2 2nd half penalties were the difference, but both came from brilliant moves and were blatant, despite what the Bantry crowd seemed to think. The ref was actually very good in general but gave Bantry one or two soft frees in near the end.

Canty played his first full game of the year, but was well held in general and Ballinora dominated midfield and the breaks, and literally destroyed Bantry after half time.

Bantry are in lsoer round now, they’ll not improve much so i can see them being in relegation trouble again.

Ya, good result, thanks. Good day in general with Cronan Healy winning the AIL for Con. He’ll be a massive addition for rest of the summer.

I’m poisioned from the drink.

Good scoring by Plunkett’s there. Ballerin is generally a bog of a pitch.

MBB what are portlaois like at the hurling this year

the rest of the first round is on this weekend in clare

De Sathairn 15 u Bealtaine ,

Clooney-Quin v Broadford @ Cusack Pk
Corofin v Crusheen @ Cusack Pk
Smith O’Briens v Tulla @ Scariff

De Domhnaigh 16 u Bealtaine ,

Kilmaley v Scariff @ Cusack Pk
Newmarket v Whitegate @ Cusack Pk
Clonlara v St. Joseph’s @ Sixmilebridge

would fancy clooney(just about), crusheen, tulla, Kilmaley, newmarket and the clon to win

Clooney-Quin to beat Broadford anyway first off, the Quins are tough to beat below in Cusack Park. Crusheen will have too much in reserve for Corofin. I think Tulla will beat Smith O’Briens, Tulla are shaping up nicely this year.

Kilmaley should beat Scariff, they have savage training put in this year. Nemarket will beat Whitegate who find scores too hard to come by. St. Josephs should have too much for Clon in the last fixture…

Too early to tell Dec. Laois Cships won’t kick off for 2 months or so. They have Joe Phelan back from Oz which will be a boost. They’ve been in fierce hard luck the past 3 years or so, definitely should have won one of the finals they lost. Phelan will be a boost. They’ll be in the top 4, guaranteed. Its between Camross, Rathdowney/Erill and Portlaoise. Clough Ballacolla are defending Champions but you’d think they might struggle to get back there again so soon.

Ballacolla have lost a few to oz i believe. we’re meant to be playing Portlaois the weekend after next in a challenge match. is healy still hurling?

Cahir is on both Senior Football and Senior Hurling teams with Laois at the moment. Portlaoise (and Laois for that matter) have a lad from Thurles hurling with them, Eoin Costello). Portlaoise wont have any county lads available for that game anyway, Tommy Fitz would be their stand out player and without him they’ll struggle. They’re not a great force in Laois to be honest, functional and depend on Tommy and Barry Fitz a lot.

we’ll probably be in the same boat missing anyone involved with the county. Still itll be good to get a game in before the next round. Are they still in behind O’Moore Park?
