The Profs previews of this weekends action in the Limerick SFC

SFC quarter-final, Ballysteen v Ballylanders, Kilmallock, Friday 6:00pm
After turning their season around with wins over Senans and Pallasgreen, Bally are a team on a roll at the moment and even theri early defeats to Adare and Caseys were by the narrowest of margins. Although the core of the team hasn’t changed greatly since thier last championship three years ago and they have lacked size down the middle, they’ve a good structure to their game and their movement is excellent when they get possession. Ballysteen made an immediate impact last on their return to senior after a long absence and, despite being ambushed by Kierans, showed their mettle to beat Monaleen and Claughaun to qualify for the play-offs.

Ballysteen’s lively forwards working off target man Maurice Carrig will tack on the scores provided Padraig Vaughan and Ray Hayes win enough midfield possession and their wing-backs get the chance to add to the attack. However, they’ll get less room than they did in their recen outings from a tight Ballylanders defence. Up at the other end of the field, Kieran O’Callaghan, Jimmy Barry Murphy and Mike Mansell will be expected to finish off the passing movements from deep. It’s a clash of styles between two sides who’ve held broadly similar expectations throughout this season. Maybe Ballysteen will hold a sufficient advantage in the middle third of the field to squeeze them over the line.
Prediciton: Ballysteen

SFC quarter-final, Father Caseys v Monaleen, Kilmallock, Sunday 6:00pm
Apart from their final round blip when their result against Newcastlewest didn’t matter, Caseys have shown by far the better form over the summer. Wins by seven points over Ballylanders, eight points over Pallasgreen and a whopping 17 points over Senans signalled their intent to make up for last year’s narrow defeat in the final of a championship that they last won in 2006. A few excellent underage crops in the meantime has given the Fealesiders the deepest footballing panel in the county and the fruits of that work are now making their mark in adult competition. Monaleen, on the other hand, scraped a win over Claughaun with a late goal and then lost to both Ballysteen and St Pats in the run-in and wouldn’t even have made the play-offs had Pats kept up the pressure and beaten them by another three points.

On paper, this looks a no-brainer. However, Monaleen have been squeezing out the results when needed and, in goal poacher John Paul Stokes, have the most effective impact sub in this year’s championship. Caseys also have a reputation of flattering early on only to deceive when it comes to the knockout stages. But they do have a good record against their opponents and, if Mike Galvin and Kevin O’Connor get anywhere near 50% of what’s available in midfield, they have the punch up front to advance.
Prediction: Father Caseys

Does your man the Professor have much active involvement in Limerick GAA?

Not really, he just goes to loads of games.
I’m sure he’s involved at some level with his club.

why?

Does he write for any newspaper or anything? You’d see a fair few lads on forums or like an moltoir who’d write far shrewder analysis of games than the lads you’d get in the local papers. Some of the tripe written in local papers is shockingly bad.

No, it’s a crime he’s not nominated for county PRO or something.
The current set up is a joke.

He knows his stuff alright.
You should compare his analyis there to the preview in the leader.
They have pretty much just copied and pasted the same few lines about us for every match.

The Clare papers are pretty bad as well. The Clare People coming on the scene has improved the coverage a lot at the same time though. Pull out supplements, decent previews, colour photos and the like. Before that the champion had it to themselves and they used do fuck all to promote the championships. The might splash out on a few colour photos for the final and a bit of an overview before the championship but that would be it. The same thing then would be written about every team then before matches, regardless of how inaccurate it was.

The promotional side has improved a fair bit but in terms of the quality of the reporting it’s still not great. I suppose there’s a difference between lads doing it for enjoyment and lads doing it for work.

Have PP priced this up at all Runt?

Another Club who tried to buy success in their day.

Just there now

Ballylanders 8/13 Ballysteen 6/4

Fr Caseys 1/6 Monaleen 9/2

I’ve had a few quid on at 6/4

Ballysteen 6/4 Ballylanders 8/13 Draw 15/2

Fr Caseys 1/6 Monaleen 9/2 Draw 9/1

Did you ever hear any stories about Jack O’Connor’s speel down there?

I thought B’Steen would be a bit bigger DB but still a bit of value @ 6/4
