Club Championships 2010

Mayfield beat Kinsale well, Ballymartle beat Na Piarsigh by two points although it should have been a lot more. Na Piarsigh’'s half-forward line was very very poor. Buckley, Lynch and Duggan showed best for Na Piarsigh, the Ballymarte half-back line and Coleman up front played best for B’Martyle.

Won’t be at it but hopefully the lads will do the business.
The minors were walloped this evening by O’Loughlins in the championship. Huge disappointment for the club.

The news you’ve all been waiting for, Kilkenny Southern Junior championship semi final draw:

Piltown v Kilmacow; Sunday, 5pm throw-in. Carrigeen
John Lockes (Callan) v Thomastown; Sunday, 5pm throw-in. Hugginstown

I’m going to say Piltown by 5 pulling up.
Callan to win by a score over the Blues.

I wouldnt be so sure about that Locke, ill be attending this one Tomorrow evening in Hugginstown,Thomastown arent too bad and shouldnt even be in this grade really, fucked up in a big way in the Intermediate relegation last Year,it will be a close game,Callans minors losing last night should focus yere felllas minds.

Good stuff, do you fancy Ballymartyle to put it up to Midleton or Sars, or even Erins Own? They are all strong this year, i presume though Midleton are favourites to come out?

Were you impressed by Mayfields hurling? Or were Kinsale just very poor?

First thnigs first, Castlemartyr won the East Cork Junior C Huring Championship today. In another less important game Newtown beat Sars by a couple of points, apparently Jamie Coughlan ended up with a serious shoulder injury.

If B’Martle can beat Na Piarsigh - and they should have won by 5-6 points imo - then I’d fancy them to take Erins Own handy. Midleton will be another step up altogether though, Haughney, O’Farrell and Lehane were on fire against The Glen.

Were you impressed by Mayfields hurling? Or were Kinsale just very poor?

Honestly, the difference between the Na Piarsigh/Ballymartle and Mayfield/Kinsale games was absolutely enormous, in terms of physicality, speed and intensity the latter looked like an U-16 match. Mayfield were alright, they had 3-4 very handy hurlers (Kelly, who went off injured, O’Brien in corner forward, number 5 and number 6) but I was suprised to hear they had 6 juniors starting. They were a decent enough side but I’d be lying if I was too say I was overly impressed. Kinsale looked very young but actually were half decent from midfield up - they have a young fellow named Eaton in corner forward who is a very nice hurler. Their full-back line was awful though, and couldn’t deal with the blinding sun in their faces in the first half which led to Mayfield getting three very fortunate goals before the breaks, all down to defensive or goalkeeping errors.

In a game to rival the importance of the East Cork Junior C Hurling Final, Sarsfields’ Girls have just won the Wexford Under 12 Division 4 championship final today.

Tipp and Down’s traditional dominance in the All-Ireland Sevens tournaments has not materialised this year. St. Gall’s take on Bellaghy in the final.

Claughans long association with Limerick Senior Football is finished. The Childers road men went down by a score of 2-3 to 1-7 to NewastleWest in the relegation play off.

The 'Lockes by 5 points, seemingly impressive stuff by the men by the Kings. A report would be welcomed link, sound boy.

The minors Bate badly alright, some dodgy decisions on The line

Got a brief report off the brother re the junior game. Apparently the young brigade on the team were terrific, especially up front.
The minors were down by 8 or 9 at half time. Jason got injured early on which can’t have helped but they were beaten all ends up from what I gather, irregardless of line decisions.

After yesterdays premiliminerys the Galway QFs shape up a little something like this

Portumna v Mullagh
Loughrea v Craughwell
Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry v Liam Mellows
Clarinbridge v Tommy Larkins

If Mullagh can channel their sense of injustice from last year onto the field of play they just might make a game of it against Port. Otherwise it will be business as usual with Portumna coming through. Wins too I’d say for Loughrea, Mellows and Clarinbridge.

In other news I see Cyril Farrel has finally got round to updating his own Wiki page

Managerial career

Look Ger, Cyril Farrell’d be seen as one of the best hurling managers of the modern era. From an early age he would have had a great interest in the coaching side of the game as such, like he was there training the Galway minors and he only a young fella at twenty-three, a real case of Mozart in the fireplace. You can see there, young Farrell’d be at this kind of thing for years; no surprise then and he winning anUnder 21 All-Ireland with Galway in 1978. Two years later then and BANG! Galway has it’s first senior All-Ireland since 1923. What more do you want Ger, but sure he was after opening the floodgates of the Yangtze as such, and two more senior All-Ireland victories as well as two National Hurling League titles between 1985 and 1990 was like throwing nuts to a monkey for young Farrell. Thats championship for you Ger.

Punditry

Young Farrell then comes onto The Sunday Game, a real Cinderella under the the christmas tree moment for Michael Lyster and the boys, Cyril’s there though and he knows this, he knows Offaly have a good underage team that’s coming through, Tomás Mulcahy’s agitated, kind of dancing around the flames, coming out with the same old line about Munster hurling. Ball thrown in, full forward bats the ball down, lovely flick BANG! back of the net. Cork are having a bit of run like, Offaly, always the bridesmaids, never the brides as such Ger, but watch here, direct ball from the centre-half back, goalie doesn’t deal with it, BANG, goal, game on now Ger, it’s in the melting pot. Look, Offaly have been at this comeback gig for years, Cork won’t be happy, but that’s championship for you. As such.

Castlemartyr 1-11 Buttevant 0-13 FT.

Good stuff, closer than expected.

St Brigids beat UCD by a point in football quarter final

0-9 to 0-8. Fair to say it’s the result the whole of Dublin club football wanted.

Na Piarsigh beat Naomh Aban in the Senior football relegation match.

Thats good for the Intermediate, Piarsaigh would possibly have won it straight away, Ballyvourney are only going one way.

syls surpringly hammered kilmacud 1-14 to 8 points tonight in a result that has shook dublin football fans
ballymun kickhams scraped by ballyboden in the undercard

Surely Ballymun beating the champions is just as big? 2 Dublin football super powers gone, thats good really.

Cpme on Syls!!!

Kev, any ideas as to who we are playing in the next round? I’ve been given three different answers.
