Club Championships 2025/26

So you admit it. Thanks, an admission was more than those kerry bastards could muster.

Nothing sweeter than being back to see a losing homecoming. What a fantastic day.

They’re ruthless on the turnover alright.

Ah no.

Would prefer if those Leinster Final’s were on TG4 and not RTE. RTE’s coverage is very sterile.

TG4 really get to the pitch of the occasion. Even little things like picking up the roars from the crowd on the microphones, TG4 amplify it while RTE dont pick it up at all.

Munster Club Hurling Finals by their nature are inherently lonely occasions. Like watching Snooker on Eurosport from the China Open on a Wednesday morning when you are sick from school. I’d say yesterday was my 20th in attendance going back to Toomevara v Doora/Barefield in 1998 which I do not remember being at, but I was there.

But they are quite reassuring occasions too. Its a symbol you’ve got through the worst of November and have Christmas to look forward to. I was driving in from the Holycross side yesterday and when you go over the brow of the hill where the Dublin-Cork railway line goes under you, you see the floodlights on in the distance and its a reminder that while most people are off shopping for Christmas, taking the children to see Santa Claus or dying hungover from a night on the beer the night before, there is still some significant hurling business taking place.

I always park around by Coolmore Morris Park for Club games even when its only Ardan O’Riann that’s open so you get a good walk in up by the Old Stand, past the Sars Centre and Bohernanave Church, swing a left at Doyles Corner and into the ground then across from the Greyhound Track. You really get a feel for the occasion on the way in. Its gas seeing the same lads who sell the hats, flags and headbands on All Ireland Senior Final day outside Croke Park make the trip to Thurles for something where there can’t be much money in it for them.

Anyhow there’s a real sense of camaraderie between spectators, stewards, gatecheckers, programme sellers and sweetshop attendant’s on a day like it. Everyone who’s there really loves the game and not even the incessant rain could dampen the spirits of the 3,065 people in Thurles yesterday.

A serious class of person in attendance in other words.

TG4 would be well able to cover all the games.

RTE are grand up to now, but this is too serious for Damian Lawlor on presenting duties with rookie pundits.

You need the gravitas of Micheal O’Domhnaill and Brian Tyers from here on in.

So you forgot they speak Irish in the Dingle didnt you.

Ah they don’t really. That’s only a bit of a show for tourists and to get oul grants.

No I did not.

Showing games on Saturday’s and Sunday’s is meat and drink to TG4. They do it regularly and do it very well.

RTE’s coverage tends to be quite watery where they have nervous, rookie pundits getting mollycoddled along by Damian Lawlor and they end up talking about everything else except the match they are supposed to be covering.

I’d agree with you in principle but Pat Fleury really needs to be put out to pasture

Explaining losing

Fleury is grand. Old school but he gets it.

The only TG4 pundit who winds me up a little is Naoise Waldron who can get way too excited and some of his MOTM picks are questionable to say the least.

I find Fleury’s level of Irish to be pretty bog standard. O’Grady’s command of the language is much more natural

Liam Rushe has very bog standard Irish too but Liam smiles away and is nice and positive so its hard not to like him.

Mark Foley also has pretty bog standard Irish, and Mark can be grumpy too but I wouldn’t hold that against him.

Its not about the Irish as such with TG4, its the feel they have for the games that shines through in their production.

I thought the recent years haven’t been too kind to Donal when I saw him yesterday. Failed a bit I thought. I looked it up - he’s 71. Be the finest.
