time gga fams caught up with rugby & football fans & stopped going onto the pitch- its not the 80’s anymore
What finals have you seen that were better?
83 85 87 88 90 93 97 all spring to mind
Well fucking said. Long may it continue and fair play to the fans for making it happen.
The GAA doesn’t need to copy lesser organisations.
maybe they could take a lesson from rugby how to fill croke park or from the fai in getting people to play:thumbsup:
Would agree with you on most but 87 and 88 were similiar to today. very physical and dogged. And the fact that you have to go back to 97 for the last competitive final is indicative of how welcome todays contest was.
cork kilkenny finals are always competive too but never classics
2004 wasn’t very competitive! 2003 and 2006 were finals in which KK always looked the likely winners even if the final scorelines suggest otherwise.
This year was the first final in over a decade when the outcome was in doubt until very near the end. Also the intensity was memorable, it was the first time since 2005 that the physical stength of the opposition matched KK. Made for a more even contest.
Did you actually see the '83, '85, '87 or '88 finals? You are having a laugh there. '87 was brutal.
'90 was a classic, I’d probably put '97 in that bracket also. '93 was a good final, very similar to today in the way it was in the balance until the last 3 or 4 minutes, but today was a better match. In the classic category for me.

not enough pieces of great skill to push it over the line from competive to classic
1990 was an unbelievable match. I can remember bits of it at the time but saw the whole thing again a few months back on All Ireland Gold.
87 was brutal, Memorable for two things only
Galway winning and Sylvie pulling a filthy stroke on one of the KK corner forwards- Lester Ryan? Richie Power’s auld lad?
i thought long & hard about the years I put up- im taken aback that there is disagreement
Fair play to Kilkenny. A serious team. The score taking and intensity from both sides today was a sight to behold. Fantastic Stuff.
Benny Dunne should be put in stocks outside Hayses Hotel, stupid stupid pull from him. You can take the man out of toome etc…

Nickey English on The Road to Croker about that Galway Tipp final.
I asked the ref how long was left. Sylvie jumped in and said “about 12 months”

i dont think the powerplay won it for kilkenny though so why blame dunne
With that level of intensity, being down a man was always going to tell. The penalty was very harsh, but it was the 2nd goal was the killer. Dunne has been around along time, he achived nothing with that. As my trainer used to say, "if you’re going, make sure you bring him with you.
Few things from the highlights. The amount of slipping and sliding on that pitch, most notably when Eoin Kelly slipped when he was one on one with Ryan. To produce a game like that on that pitch is a huge tribute to the players.
Again it has to be said that the GAA have absolutely no right to moan about any effect that spectators have on the pitch when they rip it up in mid season. Conor O’Mahony slipped on his arse when he was about to nail Richie Power before Power went on the solo run that resulted in the penalty.
Pass of the year from Kerwick to Callanan for the first one on one and save of the year without question. Callanan has it all, he’s going to be some player if he keeps his head screwed on.
PJ Ryan is nailed on for an All Star after that performance. Comerford shortened the hurley brilliantly for the goal when most players would have been sandwiched by the two encroaching defenders.
Dunne’s pull was pure filth. Up there with Declan Ryan’s on Jim Cashman in '91 and Peadar Carton on Paul Curran a couple of years back. 3 months minimum for that and I’d give six. Although it has to be said that Walsh is an irritating little bollox and had it coming.
Well done to Kilkenny. Absolutely amazing achievement and they never had to use the back door either. Dunne will be having nightmares but Walsh was pure class.
And well done to the Galway minors too. Cant have KK winning them all.
Great game, Great team, Great manager, Great Scott, Great Expectations, Great Gatsby…
