Cork GAA Thread 2015

Limerick are better than tipp and should win this it.
Biggest issue facing cork hurling is the way the players seem to lose confidence under pressure when the previous teams thrived on it

We seem fucked mentally at all levels at this stage. As I said, the new Limerick.

Get it into you , you horrible cunt.

What?

dont worry bout it turenne. no class pure & simple. the traditional counties learn it over decades of experience

What?

100%. The point blank refusal of the majority of teams to get in a sports psychologist and/or performance coaches is an issue in my opinion.
There is no doubt these people benefit modern young lads.

I think it is changing but a lot of managers do see themselves as “performance coach”

If they don’t want one for the team (a lot don’t want them there all the time) then they can benefit from analysis of their own behaviour and some 360 coaching on how that impacts the team. Most managers (sports and non sports) unconsciously exclude their non stars/non starters - cognitive dissonance makes it hard to chat away to somebody and then drop them or leave them out.

Good example of the various pieces here that go towards performance in context of corporate world - applies to sport too - very few people join all that together - natural managers like Cody probably do it without thinking, I expect likes of Joe Schmidt or Gavin have been trained to see merits of this

Ya but that’s the issue (your first paragraph). And few are anywhere near qualified to consider themselves a performance coach.

People from the business world, Analytics world and /or sports science world are generally well placed for these roles. With a substantitive back up recording system of some sort. It’s a rare animal, Cody maybe (although KK are so scientific underneath it all it’s hilarious the perception of them), that has those skills completely naturally. But some certainly do possess them. The best ones too are often non ex-players or maybe low level players. They can hve a very cold eye on it. These guys usually come in the advisor type role but you’ll rarely ever hear about them.

You have to have a deep interest in it as well I think. I would think Pat Gilroy came from this kinda background.

Something’s really simple for any team to do is put in place the GROW system of coaching. You would need 5 volunteers/coaches not involved with team to take 4 or 5 players. Non directional coaching so players do all the work and coaches just need to guide them using a simple questioning technique you can find on Internet. Every team should experiment with it

Ya I am trying to develop my own heuristic model of coaching. You has to be very careful though, as I found out to my cost, older/ignorant players or even other selectors/coaches can make a mess of it really easily and it leads to total confusion amongst players. The whole management team has to be on board to some degree.

Thats a mugging off

Mugging off themselves really. It’s the guys on the message boards fault. All that shows is a blame culture and a fair bit of nativity. “We’ll just keep playing the way we want to play, attacking hurling”

A tad silly.

Looking forward to seeing him Standing up to be honest. Have my doubts though, there is anger there and that can be helpful when channeled well, I don’t quite see that though. It’s not focused anger.

They won’t play the way they played.

Ha? What you saying

2 man full forward line. Lehane and harnedy. Horgan half forward. Sweeper. Running game.

Could all end in tears but it will be different

Might be good enough for Wexford. Would have to be pretty slick and refined down the road.

However it has come about it is probably what would suit this squad the best. Athleticism is not a problem.
