The mystery of how an elderly couple disappeared without a trace 32 years ago still haunts gardaí who investigated the bizarre disappearance.
This week marks the 32nd anniversary of the disappearance of Conor and Sheila Dwyer from Fermoy, Co Cork. They were 62 and 61 respectively when they were last seen alive.
Retired garda sergeant Joe Watkins said officers involved in the case are still upset by its unsolved status and the inability, despite an enormous investigation over three decades, to offer closure to the Dwyers’ family.
It ranks as one of Ireland’s most enduring and baffling missing-persons cases.
In particular, the disappearance of a couple rather than an individual was highly unusual.
Despite repeated appeals, possible sightings from Ireland, Germany and even France, no trace of the couple or their fate has ever been revealed.
The couple were last seen on April 30, 1991, as they walked the short distance from their home in the north Cork town to a local requiem mass.
Local girl Catherine Fenton greeted them as they passed on the street – the last confirmed sighting of the couple.
The alarm was raised just over two weeks later on May 22 when, concerned about being unable to contact either of the Dwyers, a member of their family alerted gardaí and officers gained entry to the family home on Chapel Hill.
No money was missing, all their clothing was present and there was no sign of a disturbance. Their post lay unopened where it had been delivered.
Their bank accounts have also never been accessed since they disappeared.
The only thing missing was the couple’s Toyota car.
Detectives have always believed that tracing their Toyota Cressida holds the key to the mystery over what happened and urged anyone with information to contact them.
The car, a white saloon with the registration number 5797 ZT, has never been found.
Sgt Watkins helped organise a recreation of their last known movements for a TV appeal, with a replica vehicle driven through Fermoy for the segment.
“It was baffling – everything was there. All of their property, their money, their passports and all of their possessions,” he said.
“I always believed that the Toyota Cressida was the key – if we could have found the car, the car was the link.”
He said everyone on the force wanted to find answers for the family so they could have some form of closure.
Even an appeal for any parts from a Toyota Cressida car being offered for sale drew a blank.
The garda investigation was hampered by the fact that the couple vanished with all their travel documents left at their home.
Officers conducted a careful search of the property and there was no indication the couple had packed for a trip.
Despite numerous appeals, TV reconstructions and even an RTÉ radio documentary, no confirmed trace of the couple was ever found.
A possible sighting was reported in Munich in Germany in 1993 but both Bavarian police and Interpol were unable to confirm it. It was later determined to have likely been a well-intentioned but mistaken report.
The German information intrigued gardaí because Mr Dwyer, a handyman, had worked for a time in Ireland for a German businessman, Fritz Wolf, who had a home in nearby Castlelyons.
Mr Dwyer ran errands for the businessman and also looked after his cars, including a vintage Rolls-Royce.
A current garda source admitted that, despite enormous efforts over the past 30 years, the investigation lacked a key breakthrough in terms of evidence.
“There were lots of theories but no hard evidence or information. That was always the problem,” he said.
“The file is open but, at this point, we just don’t know what happened. Without any possible sightings to investigate our best hope is tracing that Toyota Cressida car.
“Or what might now remain of it, such as a licence plate or engine block.”
The last contact anyone had with the couple was on May 1 when Mrs Dwyer spoke to her sister on the phone.
A neighbour near their Chapel Hill home saw them at 9.30am on April 30 as the couple left to attend a funeral.
On May 22, the alarm was raised when Mrs Dwyer’s sisters, Maisie and Nellie, became concerned at their repeated inability to locate the couple and alerted gardaí.
The disappearance shocked neighbours, friends and family because all had reported nothing unusual with either Conor or Sheila.
Both were described as a normal couple who followed a weekly routine in terms of shopping, attending mass and contacting friends and family.
A number of years ago, the family home was sold.
The couple had two sons, both of whom were working overseas in 1991.
Yes… and then no… they must think mcdonalds is from england.
Edit: the more i google the more i realise this fucker is bang wrong…
One of the Carkies must have some info on this
Twitters gone to fuck! You can’t believe anything you read on it
They must have driven the car off a pier?
A good possibility given location is that they went into the Blackwater. Think there was a car found in the Blackwater about ten years ago of a fella who had been missing for over a decade.
