Coronavirus - Here come the variants

Open the pubs IN the schools!

If we started a breweing school could we all go in and drink pints safely?

Schools. Are. Safe.

Pat Kenny had a few journos from around Europe on this morning. There seems to be very little difference between us and mainland Europe. They’re riddled with the UK variant and they all have various shades of restrictions. Merkel announced overnight they’re bringing in extra restrictions rather than relaxing existing ones which was the original purpose when this meeting was announced weeks ago. Reporter from France said they’re calling it a lockdown but in reality it’s not one, clothes shops closed but cobblers open. Vaccine roll out was slow everywhere, levels of hysteria amongst the general population rising also. Spain seemed to be the only exception, they’re kind of back to normal.

In summary, very little difference between Ireland and the rest of Europe.

I’ve been saying this for a while.

Or a pint shop

@Bandage did you hear minister Donnelly on morning Ireland this morning talking about mandatory quarantine and what did you think?

The interviewer tried to pick all sorts of sensationalist holes in the set up. What is there to prevent someone leaving she asked. It’s an offence to leave said Donnelly reasonably enough and I thought that should settle the matter. It didn’t though. But what is there to actually prevent someone leaving the interviews cried (what is there to actually prevent someone committing murder I thought, it’s against the law what more do you want). Donnelly kept his cool and said hotel authorities would contact the gardai. And what will the gardai do then the interviewer asked hysterically? It seemed that she was really hoping that an army firing squad would be lined up outside the hotel with orders to shoot anyone emerging on sight. The minister said that the gardai would deal with that on a case by case basis. I thought that was a good answer as it’s how the gardai have to deal everything.

I’ve no doubt that very very few if any people will end up using this mandatory quarantine and the next line of attack will be why are we not forcing more people to quarantine.

Lucky bastards. I haven’t been able to go to a cobbler for over a year.

That’s exactly the line of attack that is being taken.

It’s being broached now to add the Czech Republic, Hungary and Malta because they have high cases. The point of it was supposed to be vaccine busting variants but there is no clear basis of how you end up there and what the ramp up and and ramp off is. The power is vested in Donnelly to add and subtract as he sees fit.

It’s totally immoral to hold our foreign residents to this kind of uncertainty.

The easy solution to this if they wanted to stop people breach of quarantine and variants was to do what South Korea do and actually enforce home quarantine via an App and also random police calls, along with tests, for people who live in the country. But we went the route of hotels to make us feel better, when such an attack on our civil liberties would naturally require a longer legislative path to get there.

I hope it is challenged in the courts by someone quickly before real damage is done.

Paul Murphy was on Newstalk there. He’s happy enough with reclaim the streets protests but reopening construction would be too dangerous. Right you are Paul

In fairness the UK variant is the dominant variant and accounts for probably 80% of covid cases across Europe now so no point in banging UK variant drum anymore and just concentrate on reducing cases and vaccinating people. The vaccines have been proven to protect against the UK variant too

I think you can avoid mandatory quarantine with a negative test. Which renders the whole thing a bit unnecessary really. Just make sure everyone has a test before they get on a plane in the first place

Seems like a reasonable response from donnally if you ask me. I don’t think the quarantine will work but it’s in place to quieten the noise from some sides, but they don’t think it’s good enough regardless. There’s no winning whatever they do with the quarantine I suspect

I don’t think they’re “banging the UK variant drum” to annoy anyone. What they’re saying is, allowing the virus free rein has resulted in the UK and Brazilian variants, two countries that pretty much ignored the general consensus. Their worry is a new variant that is immune to the vaccine, an understanable worry I would have thought.

No, you can’t. If you’ve been in the listed countries or come from anywhere else and don’t have a test, in you go.

We are still not accepting people to Ireland who don’t have a negative PCR. People who were infected months ago will still test positive so are not being allowed in. Other countries have developed ways around this but we refuse to. Now we’ve added this mandatory quarantine which will affect them. It’s extremely very unfair.

That’s good going, well done mate.

No you need to test negative AND quarantine. The negative test is so you can spend your fortnight safe in the knowledge that you have nothing and the whole operation is pointless

Informative. What if you don’t have a negative test? Just the same process?
