Coronavirus - Here come the variants

The LITDF crew initially said a vaccine was years off if we ever got one.

Fuck. That.

Like after any war, now is the time for reckoning.

Take it to another thread. Title it differently.

Corona is done.

They don’t give a fuck. Time to move on

Some were cautious on the timeline but they were still more optimistic than the OIUTF who reckoned there would never be one and to let the virus rip.

Tony finishing up early today for the banker?

Conan knew.

If they said new case numbers will no longer be taken into account going forward then they really need to stop publishing them every day, focus on the vaccine numbers with the same vigour. We need to promote positivity now not positive cases.

Mmmm. It’s a day for the OIUTF lads to enjoy.

I thought that was well known. Vaccines may not prevent infection or transmission but it seems they do protect against serious illness.

Sure it was no worse than a mild ‘flu’

The tans are now cutting the windings as far as the vaccine roll out goes. Since their target audience doesn’t need to worry about personal danger the messaging has how pivoted to proclaiming that the vaccine does in fact dramatically cut down transmission. Tony will follow suit when it is expedient to do so.

Since the asymptomatic transmission canard is now being laid to rest we may as well accept that since the vaccine more or less cuts out symptoms it also more or less cuts out transmission

OUITF hero Martin Feely is still saying that. As he wanders in the Malayan jungle.

No need for masks.

You have to wear a mask.

No need for masks.

The circle of science turns.

If you get a “detected” result at a high CT value, say anything over 35, then by definition the quantity in the original sample was very small. The problem is you don’t know why. It could be for a number of reasons:

  • The start of an infection
  • The end of an infection
  • Poor swabbing/sampling
  • Old infection (although you can usually identify this by info from the person)
  • lab contamination (although the labs are set up to control for this)

You can see why then making a simple rule like ignore any test with a Ct value over 35 becomes problematic - you’re potentially ignoring some people who could be infectious or becoming infectious.

There are some things you can do, test the sample again, retest in a couple of days etc but you can see why in the context of a highly contagious virus it’s usually better to be cautious

139 people in hospital with Covid today. 44 in ICU. In January there were 1975 people in hospital and 219 in ICU.

Some turnaround. 90% drop in hospital and 80% drop in ICU.

I would expect some of those people in ICU have been there a long time too.
