Coronavirus - the deadly virus that no one dies from

Be a good plot for a serial killer movie if someone like george or luke o Neill were going with vials of covid to infect people and then killing people to keep the stats going

They gave a couple of cases there to Kerry and Mayo to stop them bellyaching about having no cases.

I’d support them. Infect the whole country

In this together

At the height of this the HSE tests/swabs were 70 per cent accurate. Media won’t run that story though.

Barefoot Contessa. Back to basics

We are, as a nation, a society and an economy, very much at a tipping point in relation to this virus and our response to it.

As I type this, I’m sitting in my office in Terminal 2. A Newark flight landed at 6.33, carrying 39 passengers on board. There wont be another international flight in this terminal until 10.45, when Manchester lands. That’s a gap of 4 hours, today on the last Sunday in August. Ordinarily a gap of 40 mins at this stage of the year would be unthinkable. The airport is currently operating at 8-9% of what it was last year (this figure is expected to reduce further in September and October). International tourism is practically non-existent. Aviation is on the brink. As an island on the western seaboard of Europe, losing a chunk of our aviation connectivity would be a disaster.

The entire county of Kildare, which has a population of over 220,000 people is in lockdown. All but essential business is allowed. Only essential journeys are being made. Cafes, restaurants, pubs all shut.

In the country, 365,000 people are on wage subsidy scheme. A further 260,000 people are on the pandemic unemployment payment. That brings a total of over 600,000 people (more than the population of Connaught) who are dependent in whole or in part, on the government. The sustainability of this is, at best, questionable. The social cost of high unemployment, however, is not. Unemployed people are more susceptible to cardiovascular disease, depression and anxiety disorders, and suicide.

There are 819,000 people on hospital waiting lists currently. Whilst this figure was already absurdly and unacceptably high pre-COVID, it has grown by well over 100,000 since COVID arrived. Medical screenings have been repeatedly postponed.

Wet pubs remain shut, with no date in sight to them reopening. Attendance at sports fixtures is outlawed. Social gatherings are severely limited. Mask wearing is mandatory is just about every public setting. Foreign holidays are severely curtailed.

In the past 30 days, 14 people have died with/due to COVID 19. By contrast, a greater number will die from sudden cardiac arrest today. And tomorrow. And every single day (15 per day on average). No one has died from COVID in a week.

If we don’t get the promised onslaught of deaths soon the media is going to have to look to season 5 of The Wire for inspiration.

I’m sending that to the Irish Times. You’ve done your bit. I’ll take it from here.

On the flip side, all this spare time in T2 is doing wonders for your posting.

It was a wonderfully researched post. I’d say Google needed a rest after it.

It’s actually bizarre but 28 likes & counting is big business.

I’ve given up on this stupid virus and and moving on to pastures new

It’s that kind of selfish attitude which will see us all in lockdown again, you prick.
