Coronavirus Thread - Pause before - The Final Battle (Part 1)

Fine bit of post-modern analysis from Sammy there.

Science is the modern oracle. If you look the public adoration of Stephen Hawking for example, Hawking hadn’t been in the top 20 most important theoretical physicists in the world since after he turned about 30 years old. Even though his peers didn’t hold him that highly, he was by far the most famous scientist in the world because he had a weird robot voice. The public heard the weird robot voice and thought “this is a guy transmitting unknowable esoteric truths straight from the universe. We must worship him.” These are the same people who look down their noses at yoga and the druids.

A lot of philosophers spent their lives studying Stephen Hawking’s extremely odd relationship with the public and how it became just another belief system to replace religion. It was all a cod. Here’s a good book about it:

You’ll see the same thing in the way the media reports on clinical or behavioural psychology. Psychologists have never once made an insight as profound as Tolstoy or Dostoevsky. But you’ll see shitty newspapers like the Metro reporting stories like “Psychologists tell us why people are littering more now that lockdown is over.”

If you read that (don’t bother) it says that psychologists have decided that people are littering more after lockdown because their regular routine has been disrupted and they “have to learn how to behave in public again”. What a load of bollocks! Maybe some people are littering more after lockdown because they feel angrier or more hedonistic? How the fuck does this psychologist lad know and what’s he doing in the paper? Don’t forget that these are the same psychologists who told us that people would find it very hard to stick with lockdown and had no idea that half the population would love it and want lockdown to continue forever. If all this behavioural psychology stuff is scientifically proven then why is so much of it completely wrong?

It’s just another belief system.

Leo Tolstoy says in War and Peace “We tend to love people more for what we do for them, rather than what they do for us”. That’s a very profound and correct observation. It helps explain why America is so in love with Israel for example. It’s a helpful piece of advice. Why isn’t that in the newspaper?

Stephen Hawking was a cod, behavioural psychology is a cod and Covid is a cod. The scientific method is not a cod but that’s a different matter completely.

What a post

What’s your view on Kahneman and Tversky

One of many. He is the star of the pandemic.

Trump had this in fairness

@Copper_pipe they’ve gotten very slow with putting up the swab data now that cases are falling. They are deadly for only providing the information that helps form the narrative they want.

It’s usually between 3 and 4pm… Early days yet.

391 positive swabs from 10,494.

3.73% positivity

Stick a fork in it.

Superb post. There hasn’t been a truly noteworthy theoretical physicist since our own Edwin Schrodinger passed away in 1961. Agreed on behavioral psychology, basically telling people what they want to hear, a bit like Covid media reporting.

I always thought ‘yes’ was the obvious answer to that question

is Tony Holohan even a proper doctor?

We’re nearly there now that we can put it down to Level 5, just give Tony another couple of days.

When level 5 actually takes effect we will go into negative cases

322 cases

5 deaths

Level three turned out to be effective all the same.

Level 5 4eva

This is all level 5 mate. The changes in levels are effective immediately on the way down, but take three weeks to kick in on the way up.

We’ll be at Level 3 forever.

Level 2 is too risky and Level 4/5 probably isn’t needed.

Biden election and a vaccine.

2021 could be like a comeback in a Rocky movie.
