By God they were not. Myself and three other lads paid 21 POUNDS a week each to live in a cockroach infested flat (I had never seen a cockroach before - we think the family came in in a bag from the Pearl River). So that Landlord was trousering 350 POUNDS a month. At the time I was getting paid 7,000 POUNDS a year to do an artfoley type job.

I’ve done the math. £1,098 a year or 21 x 52 so 15.6% of your overall salary. For someone on €45k a year that would be the equivalent of €585 a month currently. You wouldn’t get a shed for it.
Average renter in Dublin is paying 55% of their take home in rent. That was a 2017 figure it’s only gone up.
Assuming you were paying a flat 50% in tax on your salary, which you weren’t, then your equivalent rent would have been £1,925 or double what you were paying more or less.
And I’m being generous to you.
