We probably send more people to jail than we really should

I’d say it’s the exact same in the uk and US and wherever else, yes. It’s twisted logic and just another example of the inequality in society.

They don’t go to jail FFS. They go in and are released an hour later.
They do. And even what you described is a complete waste of time money and resources.

Nope. Un the UK, a barrister would never say “but he’s from a good family” in mitigation.
That’s because everyone is from good families. You get a much better class of family in England.
