Customer Service Experiences - Good & Bad

I never knew seamus callinan worked for Vodafone

Not true, they’re cut to the bone over the past few years. This french lad that owns them is firing money into the mobile side but not staffing it. He’ll flog it again in a few years.

I’ve just had a bit of a sickener. Last December I completed a job for a cuatomer. He wanted delivery prior to payment but I refused assuring him that if he wasn’t happy he could back out. Payment was made, service delivered and all was well. He was delighted, several emails expressing satisfaction, phonecalls and texts the same etc.

Last week he brought in a third party to make a two small adjustments, minor stuff that any professional would charge a coupleof hours labour for.
Half an hour ago I received an email saying he has decided upon the backing out option.
So he’s expecting a full refund. It’s about four months salary to me. Not an insignificant amount with business at an absolute standstill. Hes been delighted since early January, we’ve been on good terms and he seems a right sort. It’s a handshake and goodwill sort of deal, but we’re five months down the road ffs. He has no legal grounds, buy that’s hardly the issue.

Send him the emails he sent to you expressing satisfaction.

A bit unreasonable of him to expect to back out six months later. Stand your ground. It’s not show friends it’s show business. Cash is tight for all businesses now. Don’t let him take advantage of you. Explain reasonably to him that you agreed that payment was made before delivery but he had a chance to withdraw if not happy - he was happy and so that chance to withdraw window closed as he himself must realise. Ask him what else you can do for him.

@glenshane you don’t need customers like that. Tell him to go and fuck. He’s not an alright sort if you’ve done, a lot of work, got everything to his satisfaction and now he’s just deciding he’d rather not in the middle of a crisis.
I’d imagine he’s trying to get the money back because he’s squeezed himself. But fuck that

The third party adjustments invalidates your agreement. Tell him to go and fuck.

The third party is the problem here. Probably cut the shit out of the job and said he could do it better etc etc.

Was this a once off job or is there a nice bit of repeat business in it for you?

It’s a once off job but I’d want to see him happy. I’ll propose a replacement. It’s halfway between a refund and walking away.

I’d definitely not be giving him any money back. I know we’re only hearing your side of it here but it sounds to me like hes trying to pull a quick one .

A fast one, Mike. I hope.

Was it a set of fountain pens or old woodworking tools?

A one-word response to the email should suffice:

BACKTRACK

It was a flywheel annd wooden drive rod for a cutting bar

Tell him to fuck off lively, produce email proof etc

Don’t go proposing a replacement if it’s going to cost you money and be careful you don’t end up in a negotiation with him. Offering an alternative may look like you admitting liability to a fault with the original product/service?
