Italian Basso is banned until October due to his involvement in the Operacion Puerto doping scandal.
UCI president Pat McQuaid backed the news that Basso will come on board in the fight against drug cheats.

Strange indeed for Roche to be omitted considering the amount of training he’s been doing with Froome. By no means the actual squad, but not a good sign either.
Alongside Roche and Froome will be Aussie Richie Porte, Czech climber Leopold Konig, Dutch mountain goat Wout Poels, recently crowned British champion Pete Kennaugh and fellow Britons Ian Stannard, Luke Rowe and Geraint Thomas
Sean Kelly was on the radio there earlier being interviewed by Ray Darcy. Good interview. Anyway he’s reading out the texts and as usual some horrible Tipp cunt texts in that Sean has always been a great ambassador for Carrick and Tipperary. That’s from Paul in Fethard Sean. As a matter of interest Sean are you from Tipperary or Waterford. I’m from Waterford.
It is, but the hypocrisy of the adulation for Kelly, Roche at al, confirmed top drawer drug cheats, Roche in particular, from those who at the same time pillory Chris Froome, who is, in my opinion, clean, is remarkable.
I think they are all greats btw and would fawn over each equally. I am also quite clear in my head that in their positions, I would likely have done the same thing.
