Into the last week of the Vuelta, Vingegaard leads Joao Almedia by about 48 seconds. Jonas isn’t dominating as you might expect. Almedia’s (Pogaczar’s) team UAE have won about half the stages so far. They probably need to rein it in and support him more strongly now. There is a shortish time trial this week and 3 or 4 hilly stages starting today. The race is still open but Jonas should still probably edge it. Rumours that the final stage in Madrid might be cancelled because of the risk of disruption by pro Palestine anti genocide protestors. The Israel team are still in the race and they’re digging their heels in not to quit. Eddy Dunbar might be in with a shout of a stage starting from today. He’s well down on GC but was in the break on Sunday.

Deep Sinking will take yonks if it ever happens
Vuelta gets decided today on the steep Bola del Mundo near Madrid. Jonas leads by about 40 seconds from Joao Almedia. Almedia took 10 seconds off him in the TT that was reduced in length by half because of protestors. Jonas took some of it back in a sprint yday.

Yeah, seen that chap before. GCN did a documentary a few years back about a team of four amateur riders attempting to beat the Alpe d’Huez record as a relay team. He was the final rider to go. Think they were a minute or so short. There is no way he just rocked up at that with two days notice if he had a film crew following him.

Meanwhile Pogaczar finished another exceptional season. He won the Tour, the Worlds, Flanders, Liege and Lombardy among others. He is unbeatable or rather the minute he attacks the others race for second place. He’s now won ten of the monument classics but five of them are tours of Lombardy. He’s won almost everything but he wants to win Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix and the Vuelta before he retires. Might as well try the Olympics as well. Do-able for him. He was getting bored in the tour this year. Aged 27, he’ll probably retire when he’s 30.
It’s that time of year. Two days up the Alpe d’Huez. Montmartre climb in Paris retained. A team TT to start.
