Two days on the Alpe d’Huez? Is that a first?
It is yeah. They are going up it two different routes. The traditional way on the Friday and via another climb on the Saturday. The finish line the second day is higher up by a different road.
Looks mad.
Was there another year where they went up it twice in the same stage, or was that a different climb? ![]()
They might have had it as the first climb the second day or part of it.
Keeps the crowd together. Easier for the cops to control. They are skipping a few good climbs by compressing it. All the one, Pogaczar will win anyway.
Went up Alpe d’Huez twice consecutively in 2013. Riblon, French climber, won that stage.
Thanks, I didn’t think it was that long ago. ![]()
Lara Gillespie is just after winning a gold medal in the World Track Cycling championships in Chile.
He was on the Roadman podcast a few weeks ago talking about the climb. He had a six minute start on Pogaczar and he held on by 3 and a half minutes or so. The organisers calculated that the top amateurs would do it at 5.5 watts per kilo but he was putting out 6 watts. A 45 minute climb of about 14 km at 7% average. He was averaging 397 watts for the ride and because there were some downhill bits he was tipping 420-430 watts on the uphill bits. He came 3rd in the UK hill climb championship afterwards.
Pretty savage numbers there… I think saw on GCN channel at some point that, they were looking at his VO2 max at some point on a climb and it was something ridiculous
Said he trains about two hours a day. Short sharp efforts. Weighs 65kg.
Terrific & emotional documentary just finished on BBC there about the legendary Sir Chris Hoy & his journey over the past couple of years with stage 4 cancer. A remarkable man with an equally amazing wife. Did you watch it @ChairmanDan?
Saw it… fairly humbling stuff… God, his wife is a tough bit of stuff… health is wealth…
Excellent documentary on Chris Foy. As was said, him and his wife (and kids) are a great bit of stuff. Seems a genuine nice guy. All his friends cut up about his diagnosis.
Outside of football Scotland has a fine propensity to produce humble and likeable sportsmen.
Joining Sir Chris in this cohort are the great Andy Murray, the great John Higgins, Stephen Hendry, Gary Anderson, Robert Millar, Paul Lawrie, Liz McColgan, Josh Kerr, Laura Muir, Jackie Stewart and Dario Franchitti.
Not all of the above are or were involved in sport and not all of them are men.
But no matter, whether they’re men or not men or involved in sport or not involved in sport, none of them are Colin Montgomerie or the Hastings brothers.
One of my pals was at the roadside with a puncture once, and Chris Got, who was at the height of his fame, pulled in to offer help.
