i know he has his boss dictating the agenda but he has a ferocious horn for womens rugby of late at times leading the 7 30 sports news with it
some young one called belvin parsons who is doing the leaving cert is giving him great milage at the moment
Women’s rugby is some sham. We are being force fed it as an elite sport. Then you hear some player making her international debut after only taking up the sport 18 months ago. Rte report it in such a way that this is framed as a good thing.
It has got worse since RTE lost the rights to the men’s Six Nations. They therefore place extra emphasis on the women’s game, as they show the matches live, giving this misleading impression that a vast majority of the sporting population care about it. They don’t.
Interviews with players, coaches, ex players - nobody in Ireland plays women’s rugby. The participation levels must be only a fraction of ladies soccer, camogie and ladies football.
I dont mind them showing womens sports, even if it is rugby. If they can’t see, they can’t be. I’d rather my daughters didn’t play rugby, but it is good for them to see womens sports getting more coverage in the media.
But just don’t tell us that these are elite. Don’t tell me Katie Taylor is Irelands greatest sportsperson. Its a minority sport and she’s dominating in it. Fair fucks to her. But she’s barely the greatest sportsperson in Bray.
You can’t say things like that in this day and age…
As you say women’s boxing. Talk about a complete minority sport. Fair play to her, I was delighted when she won the Olympics but the world of ladies boxing isn’t exactly choc full of high level competitors.
But the RTE narrative is that Katie is incredible and can never, ever be questioned. Ditto the ladies rugby squad.
The dulcet tones of Ursula Jacob on The Sunday Game isn’t an issue when you see the saturation coverage the rugby gets.
Meh, I wouldn’t put it any higher than an Irish runner, swimmer, rower, etc. Most girls are criss crossing sports in their teens as well. She picked one she could dominate, good for her, but don’t tell me she’s Irelands greatest sportsperson.
