I love when this thread is bumped.
This is common not only from Frehill but on RTE Radio 1 sport in general.
Giving it loads about how good of a match it is but not giving the score.
He also setup a cut away to Jack O’Connor;
“But Jack O’Connor thinks Mayo may not have been giving the game their full focus”
Cuts to interview where Jack O’Connor is waxing lyrical about what a brilliant player David Clifford is, but without the part where the question was asked. So the listener was left, temporarily confused, initially given the setup I thought Jack was praising Horan or something, it became clear he was praising Clifford after a while. But only because I had an idea.
Back to the studio to Darren and something along the lines of “That was of course David Clifford who Jack was praising at the beginging of the segment, I should have mentioned that probably, he he.”
The sports news are much better on Newstalk in the morning but you have to suffee through Ciara Kelly’s interruptions and Coleman trying to mention that he goes to League of Ireland games at every opportunity.
That fake banter between the sports/news people and the presenters should be illegal. As should the inter-show banter. “Pat what have you coming up for us in the next hour?” Fuck off.
A far cry from the natural bonhomie between Paul Collins and his female colleagues.
A minor one from Darren just there but one all the same.
He said that Spurs are in control now for the fourth place in the Premier League.
Incorrect of course as they are level with Arsenal on points but Arsenal have a game in hand.
They have to play each other so he’s technically kind of correct
Bit of potential here I’d say.
He got to the airport early
There’s a junket for you. Marty Morrissey usually gets that Connacht opener in New York. The GAA and RTE should get some NYC based, GAA/media type to do the token commentary.
Is Johnny Glynn still out there?
No wonder Pat is so upset at the split season.
He is. He’s in the NY squad anyway.
Darren and Pat Spillane are a commentary partnership with potential here.
Like a young lad talking football with his drunk uncle in the pub.
I want to hear more of this.
Were the boys actually out there or commentating from the Montrose? A new role for Pat Spillane as co-com to complete the set of Sunday Game roles.
A tweet some posts up suggests they were actually there.
I’d say you could knock a short lived sitcom out of Darren and Pat’s adventures in New York.
They defo have some chemistry as a commentary partnership.
Pat carefully avoided referring to Pat Jnr. kicking for the Magpies. He’s a big rangy lad is young Pat.
I don’t think he’ll be troubling the All-Star selectors this year.
The permutations on the final day of the League can sometimes be a bit muddled, (that’s live radio) but with Spillane to guide him… the expenses form here will be filled in comprehensively.
