Diego Maradona Appreciation Thread

Do you remember the friendly v West Germany in 1989. Jack played Liam Brady out wide and he was miles off the pace and Jack hooked him . It was the end for Chippy .

Not quite on the level of "Paddy dashed back towards his goal like a woman who smells a cake burning.

The ball won the race and it curled inside the near post as Paddy crashed into the outside of the net and lay against it like a fireman who had returned to find his station ablaze."

More Roy Curtis after 8 pints in Mulligan’s

What club was Shilton playing for in 1986 & 1990 ??

Derby County

Southampton in 1986. Derby County in 1990.

Shiton was a crap goalkeeper.

Did that say something . He wasn’t with a contending club then . Around then Souness had the pick of English players to bring up and he went for Chris Woods as his culbaire

He wasn’t crap but was well past his best from 1986 to 1990 .

Shilton always looked so rigid as a keeper to me
anything left or right of him seemed like such an effort to get to
it was like he had a bad back and needed to methodically go through a defined process to do anything as opposed to instinctively

Made sense to go for the younger man surely

Exactly

Shilts was past his best by 1986 and 1990. He wasn’t the young spring chicken then who played in the 1969 FA Cup Final for Leicester City.

Dave Beasant said Shilton wouldn’t take any advice on board ahead of the pens in 1990. Said he would wait til it was hit and trust himself. He was embarrassing for those German penalties

Big Nev would have had significantly improved that England team

The freekick notwithstanding but in the same game he guessed the right way for all the penalties and still couldn’t get a hand to any of them.

Big Nev was from Wales. That might explain why Sir Bobby didn’t select him.

He was 3 months from his 41st birthday at 1990. That said wasn’t Dino Zoff 40 in 1982 ??

:joy::joy:

Did Bobby Robson ever think of putting Bryan Robson in goal after he dislocated his shoulder in '86? Even an injured Robson would surely have made a better attempt to punch that ball away than Shilton?
